House passes college financial-aid bill
By Ruth Mantell, MarketWatch
Last Update: 4:36 PM ET Jul 11, 2007

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The House passed a student-loan bill Wednesday that would boost college financial aid by about $18 billion over the next five years and cut federal subsidies to lenders.
The College Cost Reduction Act of 2007, which passed 273-149, also calls for investing in minority institutions, controlling repayment rates and creating loan-forgiveness programs, among other actions.

"This bill is a remarkable step forward in our efforts to help every qualified student go to college," said Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., chairman of the education and labor committee and author of the legislation, in a statement. "With this bill, we are saying that no one should be denied the opportunity to go to college simply because of the price."

The Senate is expected to vote on college-funding legislation this month. If that legislation passes, then conference on a combined bill would begin.

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said the House bill "is a big victory for students and families across America who face rising college costs. The time to put the needs of students ahead of the profits of the banks is long overdue. I look forward to passage of similar legislation in the Senate this month."

On Tuesday, the White House threatened to veto the House bill, claiming that it fails to help the neediest college students and creates programs with long-term costs for taxpayers.

5. Oh that's not true.
If you only have two Bentley's instead of the four your neighbor has, you're one of the neediest.

2. "Chutzpah Administration" - that's a good one,
and really apt here. I teach high school; the availability of financial aid weighs very heavily on people's minds. Here's hoping A) a veto can be overridden, and B) if it can't, parents and 18-year olds remember this come Nov. '08.

3. I would like to know
if any of the student loan bills will assist those of us who are still paying college loans off at a 9% interest rate. They only speak of future students. What about the ones who are suffering now?

8. I thought that in addition to increasing the availability of aid for current students,
it helped lower the repayment amount and gave more forgiveness options for all students.

6. The "neediest" don't need these loans anyway.
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 01:29 PM by The_Casual_Observer
The loans are for middle class people squeezed out of the "needs based" money & can't put enough money away from their shitty jobs to pay for it from savings. This is just another kick in the ass
to the middle class courtesy of jr & friends.

7. Definition of "needy"
Rich kid who needs pardon because he might burn your ass = needy

Poor kid who needs education so he'll become strong and intelligent enough to combat you = not needy

9. You can't have all those "needy" children going to college. They
are the ones that are being counted on to enlist.

10. I wish GWB would be half as concerned about all
taxpayers money going down the drain on this misguided
war in Iraq.

The difference between Dems and Repubs is how and where
they want to spend money.

Never let Repubs off the hook . They spend but it is on Corporations
and War, Military Spending. He sounds so hypocritical talking
about the neediest.
