Can we please stop talking about Bob Allen?
Yeah, OK, so he offered a police officer 30 bucks for permission to give him a blow job. And yeah, that's illegal. But what if he got charged, and there weren't enough votes in the jury to convict him? Then he'd go free. And that'd make the democrats look bad. So let's just forget the whole thing ever happened.

1. I Was Going to Ask---Who's Bob Allen?
But you covered that nicely. I don't want to talk about him anyway. How about that sunshine? And there's cool breezes blowing today. We could use some rain though, if you Texans would let the moisture move up Michigan way, please.

53. Stop reading what you think I wrote and read what I wrote...
The argument against impeachment is that we should just continue holding "robust" investigations. Impeachment will lead to more partisan bickering, and we Americans are just sick of it. We're "yearning" for a new kind of politics, right? We're just wanting to rise above the petty politics and work in a bipartisan manner, right? Isn't that what our party leaders and most of the rank-and-file say?

Now re-read what I wrote. I specifically say that we should hold investigations but we shouldn't imprison. This isn't too hard of a distinction to make. I just used quotes from Pelosi and Obama to make the same point the OP made.

61. I think you're mischaracterizing the argument
we're saying continue invetigations and FIND something so serious, so provable, so blatant, that impeachment would then succeed.

You don't impeach and then go looking for a reason.

65. No...
your avatar explicitly said that impeachment is off the table and that Bush is not worth impeaching. Obama said, essentially, that Bush has not committed any grave and intentional breaches of presidential authority worthy of impeachment. Those were the two targets of my original post.

If Pelosi or Obama said what you did, link it for me and you will make my evening.

And if you don't think the secret network of torture prisons and NSA spying is sourced enough to proceed to the Judiciary Committee for an impeachment inquiry, then what further evidence are you waiting for? A size 10 bloody shoeprint?

67. One more time...from my original post...
"We should just continue investigating him..."

This statement means that our leadership, including your avatar, says "continue investigating".

Then I say this:

"...but we need to take imprisonment off the table."

If you replace the word "imprisonment" with "impeachment", you have a paraphrase from Pelosi. In other words, investigate but do not impeach. Impeachment is "off the table".

Then I say this:

"He isn't worth it..."

Which is a direct quote from Pelosi.

Then I said:

"...and besides, a trial would just get us into a tit-for-tat that the American people are tired of."

This was a dig at Obama's mass email today regarding his opposition to pursuing impeachment, stating a desire to rise above the petty politics as usual in Washington, DC.

Obviously, I am upset at the "investigate but don't impeach" strategy. I think it is dangerous and could backfire. I chose to express my anger in satirical form.

8. If the prosecutor knew ahead of time
that he couldn't be convicted, then he probably wouldn't prosecute.

But in this case, there's no reason to believe he'd get off (no pun intended).

You're trying to make this equivalent to impeachment, where we can reasonably presume that 17 republicans won't vote to remove.

But nice try.

impeachment is an entirely political process - that's why it occurs in the legislature, and it's why the only punishment is removal from office.

It's not criminal.

47. Here's some others who agree...
*John Dean: Impeachment is a political process 12/15/06

*American Bar Association: While it has elements of the criminal process, it is also a "political" process in that it is designed to deal with misconduct by high public officers. In the words of professor Jeff Atkinson of DePaul Law School, impeachment is designed "to protect our country and our Constitution from leadership that has become a danger to the country. Phrases used by the framers of the Constitution include 'corruption,' 'abuse of power,' 'subversion of the Constitution,' and 'neglect of duty.'"

In keeping with this purpose, the process and remedy are also "political." Our elected representatives in Congress sit in judgment, and, if convicted, the offender is removed from office and not permitted to hold office again.

*THE FEDERAL IMPEACHMENT PROCESS: A CONSTITUTIONAL AND HISTORICAL ANALYSIS by Michael J. Gerhardt. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1996. 233 pp. Cloth $29.95.
: Impeachment is a political process designed to investigate, expose, and remedy political crimes committed by a special class of politicians subject to unique political punishments

As MonkeyFunk says, impeachment is a political process, not a criminal one.

Allen is being tried in a court in Titusville, FL -- NOT by the US Senate.

6. You know, this COULD have been Bob Allen's first time.
Or what if, like, his wife was all like, "I'm not gonna suck your dick. It's awful."

And he was like, "Oh, no it's not. You love it."

And she was all, "I hate it. Why don't you try sucking a dick, and you'll understand why I don't suck yours."

And then he was like all, "Well, fine. Maybe I will go suck a dick."

I mean, what if he was just all like, "I'm curious about what it's like to suck a dick. I'll pay you $20 if I can suck yours," and he just TOTALLY got busted the first time.

I mean...

Who hasn't been THERE?
