Ex-con pastor faces 7 years for chemical stash

Categories: Courts

An ex-con pastor could spend up to seven years in prison if convicted of stashing potentially explosive chemicals at his home in the Graniteville section of Staten Island.

Miguel Serrano, 57, of the 100 block of Ada Drive, was charged with one count of first-degree reckless endangerment in a grand jury indictment filed today at state Supreme Court, St. George. The charge - a Class D felony count which carries a maximum seven years in prison upon conviction - stems from a raid on Serrano's home June 28 when police recovered large quantities of potassium nitrate, sulfur, hydrogen peroxide and iron oxide among 19 different types of potentially explosive ingredients used to make gunpowder and pyrotechnics. Cops also found 2,500 pounds of potassium nitrate - a chief component of
gunpowder - at a nearby Public Storage Facility in Mariners Harbor.

3. No comment on the home-grown terrorist angle?
More than 2500 pounds of chemicals that could be used to make pyrotechnics and gunpowder leaves the tenuous religious angle in the dust.
