BREAKING: Conrad Black just found guilty of 4 charges
Edited on Fri Jul-13-07 10:42 AM by Canuckistanian
It's just on the CBC radio now.

Guilty of 4 counts out of 13.

No details yet

On edit: The CBC website says THREE counts, but the original radio report that I heard said FOUR counts.

Businessman Conrad Black has been found guilty on two mail fraud charges and one obstruction of justice charge, a Chicago courtroom was told Friday morning.

On the other changes, Black was found not guilty.

From CTV:

Black found guilty of obstruction of justice

After 10 days of deliberations, the jury at the fraud trial for Conrad Black has found the former media baron guilty on four of 13 counts in his fraud and racketeering trial, including the serious charge of obstruction of justice.

snip

"This is very bad news for Conrad Black, for Eddie Greenspan and for his lawyer Ed Genson. This carries a maximum penalty in the United States of 20 years in prison, US$250,000. He won't obviously see 20 years but he is probably looking at prison time," said Todd.

more, one more paragraph

2. There seems to be a discrepancy in the number of mail fraud counts
I'm now seeing THREE counts of mail fraud.

5. The obstruction charge was always there
It's just the number of mail fraud charges that changed.

9. Well, he's like our version of Ken Lay
When he very loudly renounced his Canadian citizenship so he could accept the peerage to the House of Lords, he pissed off a lot of us.

And personally, he's just a nasty piece of work, constantly sneering at and insulting liberals and even moderates.

13. We have a Candian channel on our cable.
And you are correct. I listen to the news because you find out more than you do in ANY OF MANY MANY REPUBLICAN ones we have in this country. And they don't opinionize the news. That's done only when they give an opinion commentary. They give both sides.

12. Close friend of Richard Perle
They did business together, each trying to rip the other off...

As Hilzenrath noted, the two (Perle & Black) met at (natch!) the Bilderberg Conference. Perle joined the Hollinger board in 1994 and quickly became part of Black's inner circle, serving on the company's executive committee. In the late 1990s, as the section of the report beginning on Page 339 shows, Perle got it into his head that Hollinger should form a unit to invest in Internet companies. And who better to run it than a former assistant secretary of defense? Never mind that Perle knew as much about the prospects of Trip.com as Amazon.com CEO Jeffrey Bezos knew about throw weights. Perle was named chairman and chief executive officer of the new unit, Hollinger Digital. Still it was clear who was boss. "According to Perle, Black was the ultimate decision maker on investments," the report notes. What's more, Perle "lacked the authority to commit Digital's capital without Black's approval."
