You tell me what is wrong with this picture
Edited on Fri Jul-13-07 02:15 PM by SoonerPride
The United States is far and away the global leader in military spending. Consider the following:

The United States spends more than the next 42 highest spending countries in the world (COMBINED)

The United States account for 47 percent of the world’s total military spending
The United States spends five times more on the military than China, and 11 times more than Russia

The United States outspends the remaining “Axis of Evil” countries – Iran and North Korea – by a ratio of 72 to one

The United States and its allies (the NATO countries, Japan, South Korea and Australia) spend $950 billion on their militaries combined, 70 percent of the world’s total

If you took the $644 billion the United States will spend on the military in the coming year, and you converted it all into silver dollars, and you stacked these silver dollars one on top of another, it would make a stack 1.1 million MILES high. That’s enough to go around the Equator 45 times, or back and forth to the Moon. Twice.

5. I expect we should pay. I also favor mandatory service...
....either armed or Peace Corp, but every youth should serve a two year stint for the country.

No exceptions for wealthy, Presidents kids, or anything else.

Mandatory.

Everyone would feel a sense of ownership in our democracy.

7. What's wrong with this picture? I'm guessing that silver dollar thing would be hard to
accomplish. Now, realistically, how do you expect to end up with a stack 1.1 million miles high? Without collapsing?

8. We've slipped -- used to be > ALL the rest of the world combined
i.e. over 50% of world defense spending.

9. The US has lost the ability to convince other nations with ideas and relies on arms instead
We have shifted our resources to destruction instead of construction. Oppression instead of impression. And unfortunately this is not how the world works any longer. We are a dinosaur. Large and powerful and waiting to die from our own limitations.
