Ballots panel votes paper! - Riverside County California to dump Sequoia??
the front page headline story in the Friday, July 13,Riverside Press Enterprise newspaper (sorry no link, I am reading the actual paper and their online registration is intrusive)

Ballot Panel Votes Paper- Independent commission says residents' trust is more important

"Riverside County, the first in the state to use electronic touch screen voting machines, should return to a paper based voting system, a panel appointed by the board of supervisors has recommended.
The Sequoia voting systems machines in use the by the county since the 2000 presidential elections havent gained voter confidence and have failed to meet expectaitions of reliability and cost savings, the five member panel found.
The panel found no evidence of any errors or defects in the county's touch screen system, however."

Paraphrasing:

Sequoia declined comment pending review of the recommendation.
The county supervisors board will review the report next week. Only the supervisors can actually restore paper ballots and dump e-voting machines.
The board of supervisors appointed the panel after being "overwhelmed with complaints about delays caused by technical malfunctions at the polls in the November election and results that took weeks to post."
A supervisor said he was surprised by the report of the commission.
An elections integrity group said they were pleased, but did not think the result was something supervisors wanted to hear.

My comments:
sounds like a new system would be optical scan.
absentee ballots will continue to increase as a per cent of total ballots cast.
Riverside city and county officials are notoriously financed by developers who give the cash then get the favorable votes.
You may be shocked to hear that elected officials can see NO CONFLICT of interest in any of this. Democrats are no better than republicans on this account.
While election machines are not related directly to developers, I would be suprised to hear that county officials accept this report and act on it. they get lots of gravy from evoting machine companies, like conferences that are far away from riverside county. and
this may be a tie to campaign cash, not from developers, but from evoting machine outfits.

Wish us luck, even though it is not paper ballots counted at the precinct leve, it is an improvement.
