San Diego Border Fence Construction Resumes
S.D. Border Fence Construction Resumes

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Bulldozers are rolling again on the U.S.-Mexico border, moving hundreds of tons of dirt to make way for a 16-foot steel fence in an area that once was the most popular crossing for illegal immigrants.

But before the construction resumed recently, the 14-mile project in San Diego was stalled for years by legal challenges from environmentalists, budget problems and difficulties buying land. Those delays are now raising doubts about a government plan to extend fencing to 370 miles of the Mexican border.

The Bush administration, under pressure to tighten border security, wants all 370 miles done by the end of next year.

"If past experience is any guide, it will cost a lot more than anyone expected and take a lot longer than anyone is talking about right now," said David Shirk, director of the University of San Diego's Trans-Border Institute, which studies border issues.

1. I hope people can use it to play handball, too, because it won't work
to keep people out.

2. This fence needs to be added to the 'Stupid ways to waste the taxpayers money' list.
This is some of the craziest stuff I've read in a while. This is just crazy, man......

3. At least the Bridge to Nowhere went somewhere.
This is just crazy. Even *I* can scale a 16 foot fence and I'm not all that motivated.

7. Regardless of the cost, I believe the border must be made secure...

We need to know who is in this country. People who are here should be here legally. Illegal aliens should be sent packing back from whence they came and made to apply for visas like everyone else. I don't understand why building a fence seems to be such a big deal. The status quo is not working: more and more illegals are entering the United States and it has to stop.

8. Will they reinforce the ground under the fence?

They've been finding tunnels under the border for years down here.

Solution: Go after the employers that lure and hire them for cheap labor.
No jobs offered - no illegal immigration.
