14 July 1789 - 14 July 2007: Bastille day, still a date for progressives
Have a nice day, French friends on DU.

I celebrate it every year, though I'm Italian and here it's just another day.
I always loved this event in the French Revolution, its meaning, its outcomes for modern Europe.

The investigation on the event (1790), according to Georges Rudè, reported that the heroes were not only desperate miserable people, but 954 among artisans, craftmen, workers from Faubourg Saint-Antoine. People who had a place and were integrated with their society - people who, in acting, had something to risk and to lose in the event.

Modern Activists were born in those days, in a sense.

Today I'll make a toast to all the "enfants de la patrie" in the whole world, in every single village or city-block - a toast to all unknown people who in their little life fight against social and political injustice!

Have a nice 14 July, DUers!

1. They cut the heads off their privileged classes and got free healthcare.
Clearly, we're doing something wrong.

3. Citizens de la Republique! Cantez vous avec moi ensemble! DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING?
Edited on Sat Jul-14-07 05:17 AM by no_hypocrisy
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

6. On to Versaille! Kill him and his family! Whaaaht?
Somehow that part of the story doesn't seem as glorious.

What, Me WORRY?

See you at the palace, and don't forget your hayfork.
