One more republican Bush ally in Congress rhetorically abandons him on Iraq

Shays Picks A Date On Iraq

2008 Deadline A Shift, And A Break With Bush

WASHINGTON - Rep. Christopher Shays has called on Congress to approve withdrawing virtually all American troops from Iraq by December 2008, a blow to Bush administration efforts to fight the mounting support in Congress for a sharp change in strategy.

"I believe we need a timeline. I believe the president's wrong," the 4th District Republican said Friday.

Shays has urged the White House for months to set some sort of timelines, but President Bush has refused to do so. As a result, Shays said Friday that Congress needs to take control of the situation. "He's lost me on this."

Shays' latest plan marks the first time he has specified dates. He wants Congress to authorize a redeployment that would begin within 120 days. Shays sought a House vote this week on his plan, but Democrats, who pushed for an April withdrawal, blocked it.

1. Shays must have come out of his stupor, looked around the halls of
Congress, and noticed damned few Connecticut Republicans therebouts.

In fact, he could only count himself and Lieberman.

Not that many other Republicans from Connecticut these days. And absent his comments for withdrawal of troops from Iraq, there'd likely be one fewer after November 2008.

I'm not a big fan of Chris Shays, but I see that his political instincts are still more or less intact.

Not sure if it's enough to save his Congressional seat, though. A strong challenge might push him out.

Go, Democrats.

2. How did he vote in the House?
Shays voted against the Democratic-authored plan Thursday to set an April 2008 deadline because he believed that would be too rushed.

3. I think it finally sunk into Shays that he's CT's only remaining rethug in Congress
Well, there is Joe LIEberman, who's virtually a rethug even if he shuns the label. And most of the people in CT are now against the war.

4. Funny how he waited until after being re-elected to jump off the Bush wagon
Trying to save your ass, Chris?

HIS ONLY PLAN IS TO LEAVE THE MESS TO THE NEXT PRESIDENT SO IT WON'T SHOW UP IN HISTORY BOOKS WHAT A LOSER HE IS!
WELL IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!

7. Bullshit, Bullshit, Bullshit
Yep...he says one thing, votes another. I have far more respect for a kool-aid drinker who stays consitant with their bloodlust and greed rather than some weaseldick who wrings his hands when the camera is on and then "resumes the position" and jumps when Rove cracks the whip.

A long time ago, I thought this guy was one of the few Repugnican with some brains and credibility. That long ago got shattered. This hack needs to be ridiculed for his fence-sitting.

The new Repugnican meme: I voted against it, before I voted for it.
