3. I don't think Vitter will resign and I'm not even sure that |
|
the governor will appoint a democrat. Another thread says she is in negotiations with the GOP if the event of resignation comes up. But my guess is that enough republicans will tell Vitter to sit out the storm and stay put afterall he doesn't have to face voters until 2010.

7. I think the Repubs are telling the Dem governor |
|
that the state needs federal money because of Katrina. Bush will veto any money for the state unless there is a Repub senator. The Repubs will tell her that they will press Vitter to resign only if she agrees to appoint a Repub.
Unfortunately, for the Repubs, they don't hold all of the high cards. The Dem governor can say then just leave Vitter in office. The state gets the same amount of money, and the Repubs are seen as hypocrites and are vulnerable in the 2010 Senate race.

Lieberman isn't the only Dem problem. It's going to take a whole lot more than one additional Dem to fix the problem of conservative Democrats.

11. It's appalling that the 'offer' reportedly being made to Blanco isn't honestly framed. |

In essence, the GOP is asking "help us get rid of a political embarrassment WITHOUT paying a political penalty."
Huh?!??
They replace an amoral hypocrite (Livingston) with an even more amoral hypocrite - (somebody) KNOWING he's a sleaze-ball and pervert - and don't want to pay a political penalty? Fuck 'em!
What's in it for the left? Just why the hell should any Democrat (blue, yellow or polka-dot) grant political amnesty to the GOP??

First of all, Lieberman is hardly the only (former) democrat that has been problematic. Second, even if Gov. Blanco appoints a democratic replacement, who's to say it will be a "hardcore" democrat and not another Lieberman, Nelson, etc? Third, it is very possible Blanco would be "blackmailed" into appointing another republican in order for us in New Orleans and other parts of the state to finally start seeing money for rebuilding (lives and the levees). Some other things to throw in the "speculating pot:" Blanco is not up for re-election. We do have liberal democrats she could appoint. Any attempt to "blackmail" her could (and likely would) be used as fodder for attacks on Republicans. All this attention could refocus the country to the plight of NOLA and the Gulf region, re-sparking an interest in helping the citizens of the area.
While speculating is fun, we need to work with what we have, this includes Lieberman and others. We need to see if Vitter will resign before anything can happen.

This is politics.
"They haven't gotten much so far."
No, we haven't. But the promise is if she "plays ball" the money will stop being tied up in red-tape and come rolling in (which I doubt). She even made such a statement right after Katrina, that were she a republican, aid would have been more forth-coming. Many of us agree.
