‘War on Bugs' -- City to use new mosquito fogger

.....

Not being done just yet, but possibly within a few days, will be the commissioning of a new fogging material called “Mosquitomist.” Its active ingredient is chlorpyrifos. Those who observe such matters know this is the chemical name for Dursban, which may alarm some folks.

Yes, chlorpyrifos was banned by the federal Environmental Protection Agency in 2000 - for agriculture and home use. Mosquitomist, however, is currently registered with the EPA for controlling adult mosquitoes in urban and residential areas, Koepnick reported.

“The EPA has determined that ... insecticides labeled nationally for this type of application do not pose unreasonable health risks to humans, wildlife, or the environment” when used according to label instructions, she said.

1. I remember back in the 1950s-60s when small planes would spray
over the backwoods area where we lived in MN. The sprayed air would become yellow, murky, and virtually unbreathable. My mom would call us all inside when she heard the plane coming, shut the windows tightly, and try to keep us away from the window and door areas. We weren't allowed to go outside for at least 30 minutes afterward.

The smell, even inside the house, was icky, throat-scorching, and almost suffocating.

Have to wonder how much DDT I was exposed to in my youth.

Sure hope Mosquitomist ingredients don't harm anyone at all! Seems there should be a greater concern for the long-term effects.

2. my county has been doing this ever since I lived here.
I don't know what chemical they use but every Thursday a pickup truck cruises my neighborhood with the fogger behind it.

4. When I was driving an Ice Cream truck, I got stuck behind a fogger in a neighborhood...
Note, the truck I was in had NO air conditioning, and it was the middle of summer. I had all the windows down, one didn't even work, it was down all the time, and this pickup truck with a fogger machine pulled in front of me from a cross street. I didn't hear it when it approached, with the music and bell. This truck pops up ahead of me, and, knowing no kids will come out, I turn off my music and shit, and then followed him to the nearest intersection. The smell was horrendous, and I held my breathe for as long as possible.

In any case, as soon as I was out of his path, I pulled over, opened up all the windows I had, then I cruised on the highway to air out my truck. Actually, it was a full sized van, but they call them trucks, anyway, I ended up with a headache after that ordeal.

3. We run through the house
like lunatics closing windows when they come a spraying around here. (but our lunatic status was already safe before hand:) )

I'm sure the guys down at the city bug spray department never receive any cans or buckets of stuff the city garage might have a hard time getting rid of. Nope, not in my town, move along.
