85. "The Americanization of Emily" -- though it cops out at the end --
James Garner and Julie Andrews --
a terrific movie overall --

Most of it is great --
but, the sad cop out at the end ruins it --

71. In a similar vein, 'Testament' is much more powerful, IMO
because it focuses on a family in a Northern California community, with a sensational performance by Jane Alexander, who received a Best Actress Oscar nomination.

Unlike "The Day After," there are no mushroom clouds, but there's a scene that's every bit as chilling. You'll know it when you see it.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086429/

Interestingly, it began as a short story by Carol Amen called "The Last Testament," which was rejected by scores of publishers.

Look for a young Kevin Costner in a small, very sad role.

38. Countdown to Looking Glass
Countdown to Looking Glass
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Countdown to Looking Glass is a Canadian made-for-television movie that premiered in the United States on HBO on 14 October 1984 and was also broadcast on CTV in Canada. The movie presents a fictional confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union over the Strait of Hormuz, the gateway to the Persian Gulf. The narrative of the film details the events that lead up to the initial exchange of nuclear weapons from the perspective of an on-going news broadcast.

The film stars Patrick Watson, Scott Glenn and Helen Shaver as three of the newscasters. The film also features real-life newscasters Eric Sevareid and Nancy Dickerson as themselves. Also appearing as themselves are former United States Senator Eugene McCarthy and then-United States Representative Newt Gingrich.

Unlike similar productions such as the previous year's Special Bulletin and the later Without Warning, the producers of this film decided not to make the entire production a simulated newscast, but instead break up the news portions with dramatic narrative scenes involving Shaver. The appearance of real-life newscasters, as well as noted CBC host Watson (although he does not appear as himself in this film) led additional authenticity to the production.

The film ends with the apparent commencement of a full nuclear exchange between America and the Soviet Union and the activation of a fictional version of the Emergency Broadcast System, the then-current warning system that was designed to take over radio and television broadcasts in the event of a nuclear war.

One of the CTV rebroadcasts of the film in the mid-1980s occurred only days before an actual confrontation in the Persian Gulf occurred between American and Soviet ships, although the outcome of the real-life dispute was rather more positive.

Fail-Safe (television)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fail-Safe is a televised play, based on the Cold War novel by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler, and broadcast in 2000. The play, broadcast live in black and white on CBS, starred George Clooney, Richard Dreyfuss, and Noah Wyle, and was one of the few live dramas on American television in four decades.

The novel was first adapted into a 1964 film directed by Sidney Lumet; the TV version is shorter than the 1964 film due to commercial airtime and omits a number of subplots.

59. Almost all mentioned on this thread are outstanding.
I'll save them for future reference. Here is my ALL-TIME favorite: Joyeux Noel. Here's the Amazon reference: http://tinyurl.com/29qfas

I'm almost ashamed to mention how many times I've viewed that DVD, a couple of times twice in a day. It's that moving! If/when you get it, after viewing it, go to the menu page and turn on "audio comment". Then view it again. Also, be sure to view that interview with the author. He does NOT believe in God, but he produced a film with DEEP religious overtones. VIEW IT! You won't regret it.

60. Richard Attenborough's "Oh What A Lovely War"
I found the symbolism (based on Edwardian theatre and vaudeville) absolutely chilling -- such as, when the "Smith" family is going for a seaside holiday, and see that surreal gateway marked "World War I". And they all line up to go in, thinking it's going to be an exciting show -- the audience, of course, knows what's going to happen.

Even the credits montage was outstanding (still photos of fancy ceremonial weapons, etc. that get grimmer and grimmer, finally ending up with pictures of brutal "trench clubs" made by the soldiers and used in combat).

Also liked "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp", even though it's a bit long at times.

74. Agreed. This BBC movie still haunts my thoughts.
The Day After was a wimped out version of what Threads did. Brutal film.

67. The Cranes are Flying (1957)
This great film was on Turner Classics movie channel a couple of weeks ago. It floored me. The plot is simple and direct. The cinematography is stunning.

It was the first (only?) Russian film to win the Golden Palm at Cannes.

8.2 / 10 on imdb.com

69. King of Hearts.
I can't believe no one else has mentioned it. I saw it at university (back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth), and it was a cult favorite even then.

A fable about war, it stars Alan Bates, Jean-Claude Brialy, and Genevieve Bujold.

75. I know everyone's listing classics...
...but I just watched Robert Greenwald's "Iraq for Sale" on Starz tonight. It was about the war profiteering of Halliburton, CACI, Blackwater, and Kellogg-Brown-Root. WOW.

91. Stalingrad...the heaviest and most depressing war movie I've ever seen.
I've never seen another war movie that captures the true desperation of war better than this one.I sat silently stunned for about twenty minutes after it was over.
