37. She looks perfect for a 3.00pm funeral
in Texas in summer. I see nothing disco about that outfit or the shoes. I don't wear heels but if I did, I'd love those. She looks great to me.

2. It's oddly skimpy. But I don't think a funeral for someone who dies at 94...
is like one for someone younger. So, it's a bit odd to wear a cocktail dress, but, perhaps she felt compelled to wear something black.

which is appropriate for this time of year.

Personally, there are bigger issues to worry about than what somebody wore to a funeral.

7. Rumor around here in SoCal is that she has to keep in perfect shape for Arnie.
You couldn't pay me enough to be married to him; however, I must say she always looks great. AND, she's a class act. Makes me wonder ... never mind ... (to waste that good Kennedy kharma/reputation by marrying ... well, I'd better shut up; my grammie always told that if you can't say anything nice about a person - e.g. Arnie - don't say anything at all).

28. She really ought to know better.
The low cut dress is a bit borderline even with the blazer, with the slits in the side it's a no, but the f'n sandals?

Doesn't she have staff to catch things like this?

OTOH, she does look like she's finally eaten something. Maybe she doesn't have a lot of wardrobe options that work when she's not in skeletor mode. Still doesn't explain the shoes.

31. It's pretty high.
A couple of 2-3" slits on the sides to keep the skirt from riding up would have been fine, but what she's got on isn't quite reserved enough for a funeral.

52. 2-3 inch slits in the sides would not allow enough movement for her long legs
and would actually end up being more revealing as they would open view to inner leg more than the back slit does.
But really, what the hell does it matter? She looks fine for a formal funeral in Texas in July.

58. Because it's a funeral. Like a wedding, one doesn't dress to draw attention.
It's not quite Cheney's ski gear at Auschwitz, but it's inappropriate.

And I don't want to hear that she had to wear such an abbreviated dress because it's hot, I've been to plenty of summer funerals here in the central valley and one out in the high desert of Nevada, and it's no hotter there but nobody showed up in anything like that getup at ANY funeral I've ever been to. It's disrespectful.

63. It has been mentioned that her dress was not unlike others in attendence
so she obviously was not out of line nor drawing attention. The central valley and the high deserts of NV are NOT the same as Texas in July. I have been in all three and Texas is more uncomfortable even in your birthday suit.

And as far as comparing her dress to what you have seen at funerals you have ever been to... how many First Ladies have you sent off?

Look upthread. Her dress was not unlike others worn. If it doesn't meet your standards for what is respectful or even what you have seen, ya might consider that y'all probably travel in different circles.

And, being a seamstress, I assure you I was correct about the slits. But I guess that isn't really what your complaint is about. She didn't dress in the manner you are used to, so it is disrespectful.

Wrong.

100. The "circles" are not those of a socialite in Texas; the "circle" is the very tiny one comprising
Presidential families.

And "sending off" a First Lady is exactly the point Maria missed.

If she were that hot, BTW, her hair would not be hanging down to her shoulders.

She doesn't need to wear to church a dress so tight that it requires an 8 inch slit in order to walk.

She's about my age, and I'm not going to waste envy sniping at her ability to wear clothes I no longer even dream about.

I'm just glad she's looking better nourished, as one DUer put it. During Ah-nold's first campaign she got to looking really skeletal with the strain of the public revelations about his sexist behavior. She looks better now. Best of luck to her.

For example, recently
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1320007&mesg_id=1320116
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1321695&mesg_id=1321934
I'm only providing these to negate the "charge."
Today? Well, no, but so what?
I find it gets harder and harder around here to sort out the wheat from the chaff, thus my impatience and my current response.
Aside from that, I stand by my original point.
This kind of stuff belongs in the lounge.
If I'm pissing on the thread it's because the thread is already full of piss and vinegar.
I'm certainly not lowering the level of discourse that is already very prevalent in this thread.
It's like a bunch of gossips sitting on a park bench or at the beauty parlor.

What kind of sexist bullshit is this? Why on earth does it matter how Maria Shriver is dressed to a funeral? Would you rather she wore a burqa? (And if you don't think this is sexist, ask yourself if a male public figure would be the subject of a post like this.)

88. Yeah, the fashion critic at The Washington Post...
...said Cheney looked as though he was dressing to operate a snow blower. Some people said we should cut him some slack because he's 60-something and has a long history of heart disease, but I'd observe that A) he wore an appropriate black coat to the inaugurations, even on snowy days; B) he's a freaking millionaire and can afford clothing that is both warm and appropriate for official events; and C) I'm not persuaded he even has a heart.

As for Maria Shriver's attire, is it just me, or has increased bareness become de rigeur all of a sudden, even if hot summers are nothing new? I see mostly flip-flops on women, even in the workplace, and the same goes for bared midriffs, legs, and shoulders. That goes for some of the men, too! :P I don't know how shoe and hosiery retailers stay in business, as people are even wearing flip-flops in 45-degree weather. This I do not get.

Women don't need to meet your sexist criteria when deciding whether or not to wear certain clothing. I don't know where people get off deciding that only women with particular measurements are allowed to wear certain things.

I'm gonna go way out on a limb here and guess that Maria didn't actually select that outfit with you in mind.

I see men and women do this crap. Why? What is the mindset behind deciding she shouldn't wear that dress with those legs? Please tell us what her legs are SUPPOSED to look like - and why.

from the link:

#

* For women. If you want traditional, go with a black suit, either skirt or pants. However, this next route is strongly recommended. If it is summer, go with a black cocktail dress. Plain, not too low cut. For winter, black skirt and black sweater. And always, no open-toed shoes! If you want to mix it up a little, get a hat. Not a trucker hat, but a wide-brim hat that is black. If you are unsure in this department, look at some pictures of Queen Elizabeth II, or any other female member of the English Royal Family at a funeral. (They have the basic idea, if not always hitting the nail directly on the head). A feather or flower on the hat is good.
