Elizabeth Edwards decries beating death of Sacramento man

Saturday, July 14, 2007

(07-14) 16:24 PDT Sacramento, Calif. (AP) --

Elizabeth Edwards reiterated her support for gay marriage in a speech Saturday, saying the idea that it threatens heterosexual marriage is "complete nonsense."

"I think that we have undue fear of gay marriage," she said.

Edwards was scheduled to address a prominent gay rights group in San Francisco Saturday night. Earlier in the day, she said would discuss a Sacramento man who died after his friends say he was attacked by people who mistakenly thought he was gay.

The death of Satendar Singh, 26, has galvanized Sacramento's gay community and others who see it as an outgrowth of anti-gay rhetoric coming from local evangelical Christian Slavic churches.

According to Singh's friends, the group that attacked him earlier this month as he was leaving a picnic at Lake Natomas were speaking Russian. Singh was punched once in the face and fell backward, hitting his head. He died July 5 after four days on life support.

1. this group has been a pox on sacramento, the "Christian Slavic" church openly
promotes hatred against GLBT community and nothing seems to be happening. I have written so many letters, actual letters sent certified to my Asshole Rep. and to both my senators---still waiting.

17. The thing is, this catholic straight girl was in City Hall when Harvey
was murdered. I was translating on the floor below.

And, then I caught a bus to the Sherrif's Jail at the Hall of Justice and, by that time, it was on their radio while I waited for my next translation. Everyone was in tears. Even the really nasty guys who enjoyed humiliating detainees.

I was only 19.

But what is important is, that day I realized that this isn't a game. If you f#ck with my neighbors, you f#ck with me. And there is no way I will sit back for that.

Harvey was the beating heart of this city. He still is.

13. "You were born from heterosexuals"
Wacky-assed fools. Do they really think my uterus fell out because I'm a lesbian or that a gay man's sperm dries up because he's gay? I know plenty of people NOT born from heterosexuals.

Grrrrr Argh. ...and as I always say...if you don't like gay marriage don't marry a gay person. If it really threatens that wonderful institution of heterosexual marriage...you know, the one with a 50% divorce rate...maybe people should look inward. Don't blame me if YOUR life is fucked up.
Grrrr Argh.

18. Not to sound xenophobic...
But if these assholes want to live in an oppressive, hateful environment, they should move the hell back to their homeland and leave the rest of us alone.

20. I understand what you're saying. I don't welcome foreignors
who move here and interfere with civil liberties.

That's where I draw the line.

22. Exactly.
My parents and most of my relatives here are immigrants, and they respect and appreciate our laws and civil liberties, just like many other immigrants.

These people, though, are a horrible exception.

4. Agreed.
Is this issue finally getting some play in the local media? I don't watch the local news, and I haven't grabbed a Bee lately.

It's also important to mention that many of the slavic churches here are Deliverance churches in practice if not in name, so they teach people to view both ill fortune and anything perceived as sinful as caused by demons. I think that explains a lot.

6. the bee has been covering this from the time it happened and they were very specific
about who did it and "why". I haven't seen much on the local news though, i have kind of written them off to be honest.

remotely objective. I learned that from doing the election reform daily thread. Every once in a blue moon, the Contra Costa paper. The press is thoroughly sold out in CA. :(

14. i get the bee and the chronicle everyday and i actually found out about this
in the bee, at the time he was still alive and on life support, i think so far they've been accurate in their coverage but i would like to see them follow though and do an investigative piece on this group. whenever there is any kind of tolerance day they will be there with horrible signs.

19. the Bee is better than some other CA papers
Living in the hills between I-5 and Hwy 101 means we don't have a good local paper. For a time I was reading the Santa Rosa Press Democrat (online) which I decided would be better called the "Santa Rosa Fascist Birdcage-liner." By comparison, the Bee is much less biased.

I haven't seen anymore on the church and its issues, but it couldn't hurt to write a LTTE, or give them a call. I live too far out of the area to be knowledgeable on Sac.s local news.

16. OMG! I live here, and didn't know about this, either.
But then, I rarely read the Bee, and rarely watch the local TV news (mostly because I figure: why bother?). I had NO idea this was going on... I'll start following this story... thanks for the heads up. :( :grr: :(
