Bush Is Prepared to Veto Bill to Expand Child Insurance

By ROBERT PEAR
Published: July 15, 2007

WASHINGTON, July 14 — The White House said on Saturday that President Bush would veto a bipartisan plan to expand the Children’s Health Insurance Program, drafted over the last six months by senior members of the Senate Finance Committee.

The vow puts Mr. Bush at odds with the Democratic majority in Congress, with a substantial number of Republican lawmakers and with many governors of both parties, who want to expand the popular program to cover some of the nation’s eight million uninsured children.

Tony Fratto, a White House spokesman, said: “The president’s senior advisers will certainly recommend a veto of this proposal. And there is no question that the president would veto it.”

The program, which insured 7.4 million people at some time in the last year, is set to expire Sept. 30.

but you wouldn't know that listening to some people here on DU. I guess they can't stand prosperity.

This issue is just one of a many that are important and are at least getting done and sent to Bush. But too many here at DU see the war as the only issue.

"I don't WANNA sign a Bi-PARTisan Bill! I want MY idea! Mine! Mine! Mine!
I don't WANNA cover those "nonpoor children", it'll just encourage them!
I won't sign it! I won't! I won't! I Woh-ohnt!"

What a fucking tool.

But nobody supports his plan, and he'll just let the current one run out and screw all the poor children on the plan now, and damn the "nonpoor children" whose parents might be encouraged “to drop private coverage, to go on the government-subsidized program.”
Bush forbid some parents just barely scraping by inches above the poverty level might just get a little breathing room. x(

Once again he shows himself to all as the heartless bastard his mommy spewed forth. :grr:

5. He's vetoing these bills because of a Democratically controlled Congress.
How in the fucking world someone could be against a bill like this is beyond me.

6. You answered your own question. We're (nominally) in charge, so there.
He wants what he wants when he wants it, and fuck everybody else and what they want...or need.

8. That's what I said/thought about Webb's amendment; look what happened.
The rethugs wouldn't even support it so it could be vetoed.

4. With that Republican support, could any veto be overrode?

7. The numbers will tell. How substantial is that "substantial number of Republican lawmakers"?
Edited on Sun Jul-15-07 07:52 AM by mcscajun
If there are enough, and there's a solid wall of Democrats voting for override. we can hope.

Any override would be a beautiful thing, this one doubly so. For the children, those people the Republican talk about all the time, but do little for. "What about the children? What will will tell the children? We've got to protect families and children."

10. It makes me gag to say this, but I'll give him a pass on this one...
just for the fact that I'm a smoker, and part of this bill requires an additional 61 cents per pack tax on cigarettes... for those of you who didn't bother to read what was actually in the bill...

15. This will be very interesting
to see how Senator Bubba Chambliss and senator Isackson vote in Georgia. The state repugs froze the program waiting for this money. If Chambliss votes with Chimpy again like he did on immigration he will not be reelected next year.

16. Why does Bush hate American children? It's a no-brainer:
The proposal would increase current levels of spending by $35 billion over the next five years, bringing the total to $60 billion. The Congressional Budget Office says the plan would reduce the number of uninsured children by 4.1 million.

Take it out of Halliburton's budget in the Pentagon.
