"Of Course We Need To Execute Liberals Who Are Trying To Demoralize The Country"
Johann Hari managed to get a ticket on the National Review Cruise...

Ship of Fools: Setting Sail With ‘The National Review’
by Johann Hari

The Iraq war has been an amazing success, global warming is just a myth - and as for Guantanamo Bay, it’s practically a holiday camp… The annual cruise organized by the ‘National Review’, mouthpiece of right-wing America, is a parallel universe populated by straight-talking, gun-toting, God-fearing Republicans.

I am standing waist-deep in the Pacific Ocean, both chilling and burning, indulging in the polite chit-chat beloved by vacationing Americans. A sweet elderly lady from Los Angeles is sitting on the rocks nearby, telling me dreamily about her son. “Is he your only child?” I ask. “Yes,” she says. “Do you have a child back in England?” she asks. No, I say. Her face darkens. “You’d better start,” she says. “The Muslims are breeding. Soon, they’ll have the whole of Europe.”

I am getting used to these moments - when gentle holiday geniality bleeds into… what? I lie on the beach with Hillary-Ann, a chatty, scatty 35-year-old Californian designer. As she explains the perils of Republican dating, my mind drifts, watching the gentle tide. When I hear her say, ” Of course, we need to execute some of these people,” I wake up. Who do we need to execute? She runs her fingers through the sand lazily. “A few of these prominent liberals who are trying to demoralize the country,” she says. “Just take a couple of these anti-war people off to the gas chamber for treason to show, if you try to bring down America at a time of war, that’s what you’ll get.” She squints at the sun and smiles. ” Then things’ll change.”

I am traveling on a bright white cruise ship with two restaurants, five bars, a casino - and 500 readers of the National Review. Here, the Iraq war has been “an amazing success”. Global warming is not happening. The solitary black person claims, “If the Ku Klux Klan supports equal rights, then God bless them.” And I have nowhere to run.

10. Scary, but at the same time kind of all-too-familiar.

These are the hard-core republicans we as progressives will never reach and shouldn't even bother trying to reach, IMO. They are, as you note, Not Sane. They're not particularly bright, either:

"They rush through the Rush-list of liberals who hate America, who want her to fail, and I ask them – why are liberals like this? What's their motivation? They stutter to a halt and there is a long, puzzled silence. " It's a good question," one of them, Martha, says finally. I have asked them to peer into the minds of cartoons and they are suddenly, reluctantly confronted with the hollowness of their creation. "There have always been intellectuals who want to tell people how to live," Martha adds, to an almost visible sense of relief. That's it – the intellectuals! They are not like us.

Dave changes the subject, to wash away this moment of cognitive dissonance. "The liberals don't believe in the constitution. They don't believe in what the founders wanted – a strong executive," he announces, to nods. A Filipino waiter offers him a top-up of his wine, and he mock-whispers to me, "They all look the same! Can you tell them apart?" I stare out to sea. How long would it take me to drown?"

I admire this reporter for his willingness to venture into bizarro-world and examine the odd creatures living there. But it's been clear for quite a while that there is a moral sickness at the heart of conservatism in America today.

So there are no Conservative intellectuals?

Be fun to ask that with Podhoretz and Buckley standing by.

A thought about Islam: Something tragic is happening in Western Europe, which was traditionally Christendom. It is almost never spoken about, it’s only very rarely referred to, but it seems to me to be of staggering importance. And when I say it you will say, "Well, that’s too dramatic a phrase." It’s not meant to be dramatic. It’s meant to be an exact description of the truth. And it’s this. Europe is committing suicide. What do I mean by that? Europe has a birth rate which is simply suicidal. For example, it takes 2.1 babies per woman in a nation, in a society, to keep the population even, if you exclude immigration and emigration. The birthrate in Spain is the lowest in the entire world. It is 1.2. The birthrate in Italy is the second lowest in the entire world. It is 1.3. We tend to think of a big fat Italian mama with ten bambinos, because that’s the way it used to be 50 years ago. Well it isn’t. Italy is dying. Spain is dying. Two of the most Catholic countries in the world. Why? That’s for people much wiser than I am to grope with. France is 1.4. Germany is 1.3. If you take the 15 countries that constitute the Euro pean Union, that constitute Chris tendom in the historical sense, the birthrate is 1.5. Right across the Mediterranean, directly across the Mediterranean, in the Muslim countries and in black Africa and in India, the birth rate is 3.7 to over 4. That is a staggering situation. What does it mean? What it means is very clear. In the lives of our grandchildren, or maybe our great-grandchildren, but in just a moment in history, you’ll look at a map and see a big structure that looks like a boot and it will stick down into the Mediterranean and it will say on it "Italy." But it won’t have Italians in it! It will have people who come from Libya, be cause Italy has a special relationship with Libya in the past, and people who will come from Turkey because they need work. 28 years ago there wasn’t one single mosque in Rome. When I left there 4 years ago there were over 200. In Rome! Now many of those are storefronts. But one of them is one of the biggest, most modern mos ques in all the world. In Italy! And what are the Italians doing? They have the second lowest birthrate in all the world. I do not know Islam. I haven’t studied it. But Islam has been re-animated in our time. After its enormous vitality three to four centuries ago, when these great battles took place, it sort of went to sleep. And in our lifetime, in the last 40 to 50 years, it has been re-animated. In many ways it’s been re-animated as an idea. Islamic fundamentalism is the governing mode in such countries as Iraq, and in Syria, and in Sudan, and in Algeria, and Iran. It has just taken over Afghanistan. An Islamic leader has just been elected the Prime Minister of Turkey.

55. Remember reading Dune?
The trilogy, when Muad Dib's jihad had swept the known galaxy and the Bene Gesserit were for the most part wiping their collective brow and giving each other high-fives?

It wasn't really about religion; it was time to give the ol' gene pool a good stir. Maybe change the mixture, liven (in both senses of the word) things up.
Things were getting a bit stale, IIRC.

Trouble is, a lot of people who would otherwise be in favor of that get really upset if the next generation is going to have more melanin than they do.
Shame, that...

That human migration has always and always will, take place.

Once Europe was not Christian at all, but pagan and celtic and all sorts of things.

If it ends up Muslim some day so what?

America was once Native American and the Christians took over, too.

But that was OK.

Africa has lots of Christians which it would not otherwise have had.

These people are so short sighted and stupid, they don't even realize it.

because of their white skin. They know that this is simply bullshit and once outnumbered and overpowered, they will be on the bottom, despised for their lack of initiative, their stupidity and lack of morality-- just as they view brown-skinned people in our country and the rest of the world now.

11. It would really upset them to realize it all started in Africa!!
Most of the people I know claim to have Cherokee in them here in Ohio.

My Papa was from Northern Italy and had red hair and green eyes, my Nana was from southern Italy and had dark skin and black hair.

My dad would tell her it was because the Moors moved up through Italy from the south.

Nana didn't like that too much....

So I guess it started a couple centuries ago.... at least!!!

I guess they want the fence around all of America!

52. That reminded me of a decade ago, I was working
at a place called Indian Echo Caverns, a show cave near Hershey PA. Any proof of Indian habitation was long ago carried off by souvenir hunters but it's assumed the native americans used the place. Anyhow...given the name of the place the gift shop featured a lot of indian stuff. Some of it embarassingly cheesy (vinyl headresses and tomahawks), and some of it at least trying to be a little more tasteful if not actually authentic. It was just funny some of the folks coming in trying to get us to carry their "authentic Indian-made" merchandise--I know that if you're 1/16 Cherokee you're STILL part Cherokee (just as I'm perhaps 1/16 English but part English nonetheless), and I'm not intending to belittle anybody's claims to their heritage, but it was just funny the number of blonde, blue-eyed "Indians" who came into our place trying to get us to buy their nasty pastel-airbrushed pink headresses and shit. Now I live in North Georgia, and I have friends who really are part Cherokee and you can see it in their faces. And there is some fascinating family history there as well...rural nurses and actual medicine women and all sorts of neat stuff. Real Firefox stuff. Sorry I'm rambling.

Their grandmother is 1/2 Cree on their dad's side (dark and gorgeous still at 71, and Metis-looking to the bone, high cheekbones and all), but their mother is from a long line of Teutons, so her genes won!

Isn't genetics amazing?

107. Good to hear from you!
We've run into each other on some other threads recently, but I forget where.

I remember a genealogy quote that has something to do with how Great-Great-Grandpa's nose can still be so obvious in descendents so many generations down the line, even when they represent no more than...what?...a 32nd, a 64th of the kid's genetic make-up. I think it was meant somewhat tongue-in-cheek, that it was commenting on the ego of folks who see "their" characteristics persisting long down the line. But, to me, that is a good kind of pride. While I am amused by them I also cherish ancient photos I have of a great-great- or great-great-great-grandmother who looks EXACTLY like my beloved Grandpa Miller in drag. Especially since Grandpa liked to do silly outfits.

I'm also trying to remember some other genealogical comments you made in another recent thread that caught my eye. I have done almost no family tree stuff recently. Having a young child (now four) didn't leave much time for hobbies, and I'm 700 miles away from most of the information sources I could use, but I'm going to try to get back into it soon.

Thanks for not misunderstanding my post. My ex is largely of Mediterranean descent and I know first hand that some genes simply steamroller others into submission, and that just because you look Sicilian doesn't mean that you're not one quarter Irish.

BTW...what does "metis" mean...Google ahoy....

108. Ha! Can tell you're not Canadian.
I had to do the same thing when I met and married a Canadian. reprehensor, also on DU, is my husband, and he's a "couzhin" as we pronounce it (Use a native accent after watching the movie "Smoke Signals" and you'll see where we got that from...).

Metis is the polite Canadian term for the people who are descendants of the Cree interbreeding with the (mostly French, but also British) trappers and traders who populated early Canada.

He's actually related to most of old Alberta. Quite fascinating. His ancestors had very cool exotic French names, or cool exotic Iroquois names (one of the lines originally came from Quebec). My mother also had French ancestors who settled in Quebec, one of whom was scalped. We joke that his ancestors were scalping my ancestors, but only because my ancestors oppressed his ancestors first!

Yep, know what you mean about the physical characteristics. In our family it's the ears on our men. GIANT HONKERS!! My dad, one of his brothers, several great uncles, cousins, my GG grandfather...the more pictures I collect for my book from the various branches the more you see it......SMITH EARS!!! It's pretty amazing. I'm actually creating a little subsection where I discuss physical characteristics common to the family, and I'm going to put a bunch of their pictures side-by-side so it's very obvious. He he.

112. Being 700 miles away doesn't need to be a liability!
Most of the stuff I need is in Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, and Pennsylvania (although it's scattered in all 50 states).

My big sites that I use usually multiple times a day are Ancestry, rootsweb.com (the town/country database and the Worldconnect tree), the Social Security Death Index, and the various county sites for where the families lived.

There is SO much online now that you can do half this stuff sitting on the couch watching Law and Order! I'm proof of this. Yes, I make research trips too, but I have 750 pages to my book, and much of the info I got from these wonderful people:

http://www.raogk.com/ I recommend Random Acts to EVERYONE, because I could never have gotten this far without them. Every obit I've received has helped me track next of kin, and then I repeat the SSDI cycle and contact them again for each successive generation until I can find someone living. Then I contact that person and tell them what I'm doing, getting pix, stories, letters, etc. I love what I do.

I have used SSDI, and now that I've got a new job I might reactivate my subscription to Ancestry or one of those other services. I know there's a lot of stuff online, but I still love to go poking around in cemeteries and courthouses and stuff. But thanks again...you've ensured that I'll be busy when I get home tonight.

BTW, which part of Pennsylvania? I'm a native of Dauphin County, with roots (rhyme with 'puts' for local color) in York, Schuylkill, Lebanon, Cumberland. A little bit in Maryland, upstate NY.

the Pennsylvania Dutch folks came from Northampton County (the part that is now in Monroe). Plus, I just found a couple of folks in Butler County, and have already traced another big line in/around Pittsburgh.

I also need to make a trip to Western Maryland, as we had some folks end up around Lonaconing, Grantsville, and that area.

Which part of upstate NY? May 30, I just got back from a research trip to Newfield and Ithaca. I also visited 1 cousin in Albany, 1 cousin in Hornell, and did some research in Buffalo. I got around, I tell you! I enjoyed NY.

134. My German relatives came through the ports of Philadelphia and Baltimore,
at least those I know. The Falks came into B'more, many settled in the Harrisburg PA area, some ran a hotel in Marysville, and one moved up to (I think) Syracuse. The Eisenhauers came through Philly and there are still a gazillion of them in the York Co area, which is where my link to that family came from. Hollinger I think is a Swiss/German name, but I don't know when or where they came to the US. The Sauers and the Lehmans came from Bavaria around 1880 I would also like to do some checking in western PA. Some of my ex's family ended up there (Italians in the mountains of turn of the century Cumberland MD...wonder how that happened....). Even though she's my ex we're still friends, and her family is still my daughter's family, so.... More than anything, there are a bunch of individuals I need to write to just to ask IF they are related and, if so, if they wouldn't mind sharing some info.

encounters first the sublime, then the ridiculous.

Furthermore, he is rapier in shredding the utter hypocrisy and group think exhibited by the participants and in his descriptions of the players, such as Ken Starr, William Buckley and Kate O'Beirne, among others.

Hitler took office in 1943...The Wannsee Conference and the systematic mass murder of the Jews didn't start until January, 20, 1942. Give Bush another year or two and he will catch up. Mass murder takes some working up to.

30. This article is a public service.
I've lived in red areas for most of my life. Surrounded by republican voters.

I've met my fair share of people who would love to go on a "National Review Cruise." Most, though, would be repelled by what crawls out from under the rocks when they all get together.

I think most of the self-styled conservative republican voters I've lived near and worked with for the last 3 decades would back pedal away from these folks as quickly as possible.

78. Or because the Republicans use the right racist codewords
Contrary to what many might hope, most Republican voters are not really nice people who have just been misled into voting against their own interests. While it's true that they are voting for policies that will ultimately harm them economically, the racist red-meat that their politicians and pundits feed them makes it more palatable. They can be living in a box under a bridge, but it's all good so long as it's bigger than the box that the brown people are living in.

I'm a Liberal, a Democrat, and an Atheist. AND... I'm an AMERICAN!!!

And I, and most of my brothers and sisters in this country, would get in front of the trucks taking away conservatives, Republicans, Christians, etc... to any future "retraining"\concentration camps if that were to EVER occur.

Why???

BECAUSE... I am a Liberal, a Democrat, an Atheist, and an American.

The problem I've always had, is that I'm afraid so many of our brothers and sisters on the "opposite side", could not be relied upon to do the same for us.

And that not only makes them bad Americans, it makes them terrible human beings.

”Of course, we need to execute some of these people,” I wake up.

Wow. How very Christian. :eyes:

Are the people who make these kind of remarks usually also not the ones who compare Saddam Hussein to Hitler, and the Democrats to Chamberlain for not wanting to deal with the dictator, leading to the Holocaust? If the weak cowardly Democrat party got their way, they would've appeased Hussein the way they would've appeased Hitler?

I heard that shit, seriously. And the same kind of people are making these kind of remarks?

I'm a big fan of irony, but sometimes they take it too far..

But I guess you need to go on the cruise to see De Souza admit that politics is a class thing and GOP is the party of winners and Dems the party of losers. It goes in the face of the official "so you want to start a class war?" rebuttals....

and not, like, alien plants come here to try to take over the world?

What sort of scary thing would have real thoughts like that and not realize that, no matter what the world situation, they're appalling?

I'm appalled.

It only creates the sort of environment where you have to keep an eye out for your neighbor, instead of trying to get along with them...you have to keep watch to make sure they're not trying to sell you out to a torch-carrying mob or arranging to have you lynched because they just don't like the way you think.

They accuse Steve Jobs of having a reality-distortion field? Compared to the neocon "movement", he's a piker, an absolute beginner. I mean, Mac fans don't hope top PC people get the death penalty. But if you're a "conservative", apparenly it's okay to wish death on your neighbor.

It's like being locked up for two weeks in a prison without escape. At least in a resort you can always leave and go to a 7-11 or something.

Besides the regular outbreaks of disease on these things, they're just ways of draining your money. Why is there a casino and five bars on this barge mentioned in the article?

To a conservative it's all about them winning and keeping their own kind in cultural hegemony be it over population numbers or race religion culture they are the problem personalities that ruin this country.Conservatism makes sure peace will never be on Earth. 100. "Politics is about class: GOP- the party of winners, Dems the party of losers"
the one candid, realistic statement in the bunch - courtesy of De Souza.

"Yes, D'Souza says, in a swift shift to domestic politics, "of course" Republican politics is "about class. Republicans are the party of winners, Democrats are the party of losers."

needs to be flung in their faces. Often.

102. "Republicans think you are a loser"
I wish the average voter understood this and acted accordingly

Fortunately, economic populism is coming back (thanks John Edwards)

The right wing has done a good job of displacing people's anger - by blaming immigrants, muslims, "welfare queens", homosexuals, and "elite intellectual liberals"

We need some plain talking about how wealth and income are really distributed in this country, and how the policies of the last 35 years (yes, you too President Clinton) have done little but make it worse. People need to understand how and why they are not sharing in the wealth they have created.

121. Manipulation
Many have been manipulated by "the haves" and the corporations that control the now consolidated propaganda media machines of America into believing that the problem is elsewhere (Gays, Blacks, racism, religions, Muslims, etc).

Divide and conquer still works. They are the problem and they are ensuring that what remains of our country's wealth is redistributed to them.

We need a strong populist leader that is willing to take on the issues...head on. Unfortunately these beliefs must be kept under wraps until he/she gets elected or the candidate will be marginalized during the election process. In a sense it is class warfare, and the only winners in the last 25 years have been the haves.

These people really do exist as I've met many of them in real life.

I remember a conservative female acquaintance once saying that women should lose the right to vote because they vote for liberals. So the statements in the article really aren't that radical when you are a radical rightie.

135. I did at first also. Seemed too over the top.

But when I read the whole story, it seemed more believable. For one thing, he starts quoting people we all know and loathe. For another when you read the whole story, the totally out there doesn't seem quite so far out there when surrounded by the merely way out there which seem even less so surrounded as they are by the just slightly insane and so on until you get to the almost not quite insane.

Of course, the idea that we will have to evacuate Christians from Europe around 2015 is just plain idiotic. The second coming of Christ and accompanying Rapture(tm) will have taken care of that.

Rapture(tm) is a wholly owned trademark of a small girl in Scotland a century and a half ago who just dreamed the whole thing up; but don't let the fundies know; today's fundies assume it is in the bible or at least some early Christian writings; they'd probably be a little upset to learn it is a fairly new idea dreamt up by a female David Koresh.

But this is, of course, a LW board, not a RW one. Here, we know the scientific truth that by 2015 most of Europe will have already been evacuated because of the ecological disasters brought about by global climate change caused by human pollution. Of course, we will have to evacuate them by sailing ships with Peak Oil having been reached and remaining hydrocarbons hoarded by the fascist military dictatorship in the United States. This assumes by then most Europeans will not have died of famine due to overpopulation. Or thirst because the world will have run out of water.

You know, it gets easier and easier to believe the article, doesn't it?

105. Arm yourselves
that's about the only comment I can add right now. With the likes of Ann Coulter and Michael Savage feeding twits lke this Hillary Ann character, it will only be a matter of time before these brownshirts become emboldened enough to start forming ranks and going after the "godless" liberals.

We would never see them go and sign up for Iraq, but the mindless propaganda they subscribe to would have them believe we are all just a bunch of weak "bedwetters". Wouldn't they be surprised to find out we're packin' heat.

ARM YOURSELVES!!

120. ooh, I just saw "Sophie Scholl--Die letzten Tage"
and you don't want to say that to this Eurocommunist-leaning German-American!
Let's look at Hari's "I am asked nine times – I counted – when I am fleeing Europe's encroaching Muslim population for the safety of the United States of America." These people are literally too stupid to have children, as "tab A into slot B" would be entirely too complicated for them. The first time I read this, I calculated that 20 million European Muslims could becoming 150 in nine years would require an unheard-of 25% growth rate. "They're coming!" and France is first on their menu--which is ever so funny. Then comes cracks that Filipinos look the same, Adoration of the Beast--in the form of Pinochet--calls to bomb German courts for threatening Dumsfeld, and population growth is our ticket out of a Muslim-dominated world.
Of course, NR was founded on the idea that the Beatniks and Hippies would cut our throats and make us Cuba's seventh province, so any of Podhoretz's (and Wittman's) neoliberal "good hegemony" is bound to be as stupid as it sounds.
I just loved how they spent their time in Mexico in a little walled beach: at least they didn't shell Veracruz like "war to spread democracy" hero Wilson--who was absolutely hated in 1910s Mexico for "helping" Carranza against Huerta

The instant she does, however, I'll cheerfully crack her skull wide open with the closest available object. Be an interesting test case for Florida's "no duty to retreat if you're threatened" law. If someone is advocating that I be executed for expressing my right to freedom of political belief, than I damn well consider that a death threat.

Where are they getting these people? The absolute fuckin' boonies? I've talked with folks who don't like Hillary Clinton and don't believe in evolution, and I never heard anything like the awful statements in this article.
