The Fact BushCo Is Squirming To Avoid Disclosure-Strongly Implies-They Have Something Nasty To Hide
The right place to fight
Posted by Mark Kleiman

The White House is claiming that a Congressional inquiry into how the White House and Defense Department put out false information on the death of Cpl. Pat Tillman would "implicate Executive Branch confidentiality interests."

No, seriously. This is a Godsend for the Democrats in Congress. The committees shouldn't compromise at all; this is the case we want to go to war over, in the courts and the court of public opinion. The Tillman cover-up is a far smaller scandal than the U.S. Attorney firings, but it's much easier to understand.

Most of the country is only vaguely aware of the Tillman case, since the press has been not very interested in advertising how badly it was fooled, and how supinely it participated in the "Wag the Dog" fooling of the public. But if the facts got out there, everyone, including most of the Republican base, would be outraged. Publicity about the fight over documents and testimony is also publicity about Tillman's "friendly fire" death and the effort to cover it up, so it's a no-win situation for the White House.

..................

Finally, the fact that BushCo is squirming to avoid full disclosure strongly implies that they have something really nasty to hide. Now, I recall being wrong in applying that logic to Saddam Hussein and WMD; paranoid megalomaniacs who have cut themselves off from reality do some fairly hard-to-explain things. (The current guess seems to be that SH thought that Iraq actually had WMD, because he had ordered the creation of such capacity and everyone around him was afraid to report failure.) So it's not impossible that the facts, once they emerge, will be only mildly embarrassing to the White House. But that's not the way to bet. No one thinks Fred Fielding is crazy, and no doubt he's seen the documents.

1. That Stanford researcher who did the sadism/torture experiments
Edited on Sun Jul-15-07 09:36 AM by sfexpat2000
said outright, in his BookTv segment, that we're likely to find out Tillman was murdered by his own unit. And he meant murdered, not killed accidentally. :(

edit: Zimbardo is his name.

8. It's hard for me to believe that someone in his unit up and killed him.
If he was a target, wouldn't it be more likely that someone WHO HAD ORDERS was inserted into that unit?

The thing is, it's always the Lindy Englands that take the fall for BushCo policy.

13. in a war setting things can happen without explanations, a shot is fired and all hell breaks out
I doubt his unit would do this too but in the heat of battle ones has very little time to think rational thought, so if they did that would explain the why.

14. I understand the fog of war because I was married for 12 years.
lol

But, if it was just random, wouldn't the shooter be hung out to dry without all this fuss? It's hard to know because BushCo is secretive about everything.

AND also that they did it because they (or at least someone in the unit) were ordered to by superiors, and that those orders probably came from high up in the food chain. Of course, no proof, just gut feeling, especially since what's come out about Tillman's personal views since. They wanted him quiet. Permanently. Just my feeling (and I'm sure I'm not alone in that).

11. That's what I think, essentially. Someone in that unit needs to
come clean.

2. Ok but...
"Finally, the fact that BushCo is squirming to avoid full disclosure strongly implies that they have something really nasty to hide. Hussein did everything he could to accomodate the UN inspection teams sent in before the war. He did not attempt to avoid full disclosure and the Iraqi government produced volumes of information, most of which our government continues to hide, documenting the destruction and dismantling of prohibited weapons and programs. The revanchist theory that Saddam Hussein 'brought this on himself by acting guilty' is just part of the rightwing canon on explaining the treasonous and deliberate deception that took is to war.

The administration may have nothing much at all to hide in the Tillman case other than an embarassing and deliberate coverup, but very likely wants to establish that oversight into DOD operations are protected by executive privilege, in general, as it clearly has a lot to hide in this area on matters that go far beyond the grotesque patriot party over the friendly fire death of Pat Tillman.

7. And along the same line, what are the chances
Skeletor would share a "gut" feeling with the public? These people lie about everything on principle, they're not going to share their "gut feelings" with us, assuming they have either.

10. How unPresidential is our dear leader becoming?
Does he want a constitutional showdown? Or is he priming us right before the gut feelings of his cabinet members alert us to think that such coincidences have been politically connected from day one? We do not have a president but a mob boss. Bush continues to show he has been the biggest disgrace to this country's security and future by his policies. Only by his absence of tyrannical reign in the Oval Office will this country and the world breathe a collective sigh of relief.

I told a friend, when Junior was selected, that our government had been handed over to a criminal cabal and he thought I was exaggerating.

15. Superficial distractions
Thanks, BTW for welcoming me here. Ever since the 2000 elections have transpired, it has been like watching a Salvador Dali painting take shape, real slowly. All the politicians one would think they might want to get behind at first had lost their spine to do anything. Their must be a lot of dirty laundry to blackmail some people with that a normal person that may not do a lot of digging may think this is how Bush is controlling the entire system. He might have been, for awhile, yet, I am one that cannot know what will never be divulged to me. So, I can only speculate that the timing of this impeachment groundswell is so slow but constant that the message is not important only that it keeps the republicans on the defensive. It is also becoming evident that this conflict has been fought over for no major idea that can keep us there other than one that has become only a political one. Sorry to those that have partaken in this conflict, but I do not think picking fights where it was not necessary causes more problems for the future of our country and the world than it resolves. Political reasons become a personal issue that may become impeachable offenses in the end. Republicans are fast extinguishing their own party by justifying this type of conduct either now or in the future. I hope that the American public will see the error in their ways and correct them with voting machines that work, and show what this current pResident could not have been anything without his fathers help. The rest of his term Bush may have more trouble holding on than the rest of us. It reminds me of that story by Edgar Allen Poe, "The Telltale Heart", Bush will be heavily medicated to stay calm.

Yep, just like watching a Salvador Dali painting take shape.

I sometimes think that this entire episode of political history is just like a soap opera- and I am not into soaps.

Every day, something new and embarrassing for the Bush administration comes out.

I welcome you to DU also.
