Kristol argues that the death of 3600 American troops is worth it because Saddam is gone

But wait, wait, wait: What about Iraq? It's Iraq, stupid -- you (and 65 percent of your fellow Americans) say -- that makes Bush an unsuccessful president.

Not necessarily. First of all, we would have to compare the situation in Iraq now, with all its difficulties and all the administration's mistakes, with what it would be if we hadn't gone in. Saddam Hussein would be alive and in power and, I dare say, victorious, with the United States (and the United Nations) by now having backed off sanctions and the no-fly zone. He might well have restarted his nuclear program, and his connections with al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups would be intact or revived and even strengthened.

Still, that's speculative, and the losses and costs of the war are real. Bush is a war president, and war presidents are judged by whether they win or lose their war. So to be a successful president, Bush has to win in Iraq.

Bill Kristol: Why Bush Will Be a Winner

Hey, stupid: the situation in Iraq now is that 3600 Americans who wouldn't have been killed there have been killed there. The situation in Iraq now is that half a million Iraqis who wouldn't have been killed there have been killed there. The situation in Iraq is that a country once contained from doing international mischief has the potential to destabilize the entire region and beyond.

Why Bush will be a winner? Who besides you, stupid, cares if Bush wins or loses?

3. If Saddam was the entire point of this, WHY ARE WE STILL THERE?
And WHY are American troops still dying? THE MAN HAS BEEN EXECUTED.

4. But I hope that's where his enthusiasm ends
Bush and Cheney still demand that we send more troops to die and double those numbers.

6. Saddam was a far better man than Billy Kristol or any of the neocons.
Each of them will pay in hell for what they did to Saddam and his people.

Saddam went to his death with dignity - something that none of those who put him to death would have been able to do.

Do you win with stolen oil, Mr. Billy?

11. WTF? Saddam was a genocidal monster, his sons were psychos. Hate Chimpy and the neocons
all you want, but come on! Let's not elevate a murderous dictator to anything approaching "dignity" or nobility. I'm pretty sure the Kurds would agree with me here.

8. Kristol most assuredly has a grandchild or neice or nephew, hell maybe
even a kid he can throw into the meatgrinder, right? I mean, to show his committment to his fearless leader and the cause of course, and to show how much of he really truly believes in the 'sacrifice' of Americans for this farce of a government we have now.

13. Also, tens of thousands wounded, hundreds of thousands Iraqis dead, millions
of Iraqis who will be pissed off for decades, half a trillion dollars that could have been spent better, a resurgent Al Queda in Pakistan, our pull and prestige around the world diminished at a time when we need friends, and record deficits that will cripple us as a healthy nation.

All that for one guy who was effectively contained according to Powell and Rice in early 2001?

This meme, ridiculous on its face, can only be said because pundits and leaders don't challenge it with astonishment and outrage.
