President Bush, in an effort to deflect criticism from his Iraq policy, Saturday said the interim report on the situation in Iraq is cause for “optimism” and that pulling troops out of the country early would be “dangerous” for the United States.

“Those who believe that the battle in Iraq is lost are pointing to the unsatisfactory performance on some of the political benchmarks,” Bush said in his Saturday morning radio address. “Those of us who believe the battle in Iraq can and must be won see the satisfactory performance on several of the security benchmarks as a cause for optimism. “

The report showed that satisfactory progress had been reached in eight out of 18 benchmarks, including reducing sectarian violence and ensuring the rights of minority parties are protected. According to the document, progress was not satisfactory in the areas of reforming de-Baathification and curbing militia control of local security.

“Our strategy is built on the premise that progress on security will pave the way for political progress,” Bush said. “This report shows that conditions can change, progress can be made, and the fight in Iraq can be won.”

We, as a people, love the way of life that that petroleum has brought us over the course of a couple of generations. Like opium addicts, how do we give up what our very culture and, (from rich to poor) our lifestyles are totally and incontrovertibly dependent on? We rail and deride the obvious decision to remove our awareness from this fact, but we fail to recognize that we all currently feed and fund the drive to get more of the black gold that keeps us from sacrificing our current, induced reality and lifestyles.

What does it matter why, who, and how? We live on oil! We live it, drink it, and sleep in it. There is nothing currently that can replace it. Wouldn't it be better if the Administration said, "Hey, everything you do and love is based on this stuff and we are going to use the military and corporations that you life, sweat, and your blood has created to make sure it flows, and fuck those idiots over there who won't go with the plan, we will wipe them out if we have to!"

Well, no, they would not tell you that, only because you would then have to put the puzzle pieces together and accept your part in the illusion that this life we lead is normal, natural, and deserved in every respect, and without any concern at all for those people it affects in very dire and adverse ways, (and has affected throughout history). We don't have what we have, in total, because we, as a people have earned it and deserved it, (at least in today's world) we have it only because we, by proxy, take it, exploit it, and control it. For every good thing you have, every luxury of life you enjoy, there are multiples of persons who suffer and pay for it around the world. There. That is the equation that nobody wants to hear or calculate. It is the most inconvenient and uncomfortable of truths and you don't really need this big lie and a bunch of elected phonies to protect you from the reality of the situation.

No matter how hard you have worked for what you have, you are still getting much more than something from nothing. It would be nice and wonderful to have a fair and equitable world, but the imbalance has been going on for centuries, but this time, a larger number of people feel innocent while they contribute in great proportion to the crime of the century. But, that is NOT what anybody really wants to know and there are so many ways to obscure and distract from that very truth. We feed the wealthy and powerful that control us and they feed us what we are taught to want and find solace in. The rest of the world, along with their poor and needy, can go fuck themselves because we have American Idol, SUV's, shitty jobs, and rich people to service as we sit in our pseudo-utopia and watch it all go up in smoke while we prove our collective ignorance and keep on asking, "Why?"

For those of us who live in the "reality-based" world, your post was not an exposé, but a reminder. Most Americans have no idea how our lifestyle is maintained. We flip a switch and a light comes on; we turn a handle and clean drinking water emerges from a pipe. It might as well be magic as far as most people are concerned.

The payoff was already made to the oil companies who lined up to either obtain or hold on to a piece of the Iraqi market. That deal was made possible by Chalabi and Bremer even before the 'elected' regime assumed power when they opened up Iraq's entire economy to foreign investment; something which hadn't been done before in Iraq's modern history, and had the predictably devastating effect on average Iraqis' ability to gain any ground.

I've always felt that the 'deal' that the Bush regime was most interested in, after the oil industry deals, was the suppression of Iraq's output for the direct benefit of Saudi Arabia. Also, the current aggressive posturing toward Iran came immediately after Cheney visited the Saudi royals. It's all about suppressing, or controlling the output to lessen or eliminate any adverse impact on the Saudi oil sales; just like in the first 'war' on Iraq where there was the prospect of Saddam gaining access to the seaport and mucking up the Saudi oil market.

Then, there's the dynamic that no one will touch publicly: the Kurdish occupation of territory on top of the majority of the lucrative wells in Iraq, and the reluctance of the U.S. to engage in open opposition against the Kurds; the relationship with Turkey, and the U.S. need for the Kurdish to maintain their border defense against Iran. We really don't have any political or military wedge or influence with the Kurds except to ignore the complaints of Turkey and leave them alone.

So, suppression of Iraq's production seems the most attractive choice for the Bush cabal, even if it's just the most manipulative handle they have.
