and is destroying the earth's environments at an accelerated pace, ultimately leading to the extinction of most species including its own.

If it were true that Homo sapiens are born the scourge of the Earth(as salvationist religions would have us believe), then the destruction of Earth would have begun with the appearance of Homo sapiens about 200,000 years ago, and would be found wherever Homo sapiens are found. But it didn't, and it isn't. It began with the appearance of our particular experiment in civilization about 10,000 years ago.

29. Unfortunately NOT true. Homo sapien has continued to increase........ |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-16-07 01:54 PM by Double T
its numbers until it has arrived at unsustainable human population levels for the available resources of the planet Earth. Since Homo sapien arrived on the scene between 130,000-150,000 years ago, their has been a gradual decline in the available resources as the population continues to grow. Homo sapien's current 6 billion population soon to be 9 billion population can not be sustained by a 2 billion MAXIMUM CAPACITY planet and resources. After 1925 Homo sapien began an accelerated decline toward extinction.
Statistics on Human Population
Year A.D.-----Number of People (in billions) 1650----------------.50 1750----------------.70 1850---------------1.0 1925---------------2.0 1956---------------2.5 1966---------------3.3 1970---------------3.6 1974---------------3.9 1976---------------4.0 1980---------------4.4 1991---------------5.5 2000---------------6.0 2004---------------6.4
To put this in context, you must remember that estimates of the long-term carrying capacity of Earth with relatively optimistic assumptions about consumption, technologies, and equity (A x T), are in the vicinity of two billion people. Today's population cannot be sustained on the 'interest' generated by natural ecosystems, but is consuming its vast supply of natural capital -- especially deep, rich agricultural soils, 'fossil' groundwater, and biodiversity -- accumulated over centuries to eons. In some places soils, which are generated on a time scale of centimeters per century are disappearing at rates of centimeters per year. Some aquifers are being depleted at dozens of times their recharge rates, and we have embarked on the greatest extinction episode in 65 million years. -- Paul Ehrlich (Sept. 25, 1998)

Actually, the time I mentioned is 10000000000000000000000000000000, the first second into the "difficult" period. for those implementations that were foolish enough to use a 32-bit signed time_t value. Systems using 32 bit unsigned time_t or, better still, 64-bit time_t values will probably survive.

I voted "Hogwash", but realistically, it depends on whether Bush is stupid enough to think that one can use tactical nuclear, excuse me, nukular weapons in an attack on a country like, say, Iran.
