Bush "just wants to be loved"

WASHINGTON – With President Bush planning his library in Dallas, speculation has naturally grown that he and the first lady might end up moving back to the city where he built his pre-gubernatorial career.

Mr. Bush has made clear his disinterest in settling at the family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, where he and his dad recently entertained Russian President Vladimir Putin.

As for the ranch in Crawford, it's pretty. And secluded. And it has all that brush that needs clearing, to keep a fellow busy in retirement. But it's a long commute to all the symposia and ceremonies that ex-presidents attend at their archives. Even so, the ranch sounds like the place Mr. Bush expects to call home.

"When it's all said and done, Ed, if you ever come down and visit the old, tired me down there in Crawford, I will be able to say I looked in the mirror and made decisions based upon principle, not based upon politics," Mr. Bush told a reporter Thursday, during his first news conference at the newly refurbished West Wing press briefing room...

"You know," Mr. Bush said, "I guess I'm like any other political figure – everybody wants to be loved. Just, sometimes the decisions you make and the consequences don't enable you to be loved."
