Call Your Rep TOLL-FREE @ 800-965-4701 (Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill)
Via email from the Coalition on Human Needs (http://www.chn.org)...

Call Your Rep!

We have ways of getting you to call your Member of Congress.

The Convincer Your call pushes Congress a critical step towards meeting America's health, jobs, nutrition, home energy, and education needs.

CALL TOLL-FREE: 800-965-4701, Monday and Tuesday, July 16 and 17.

The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote soon on funding for Labor, Health and Human Services and Education departments - maybe Wednesday, July 18. We need a big, bipartisan yes vote for these vital services.

A simple message: call 800-965-4701 - ask to be connected to your Representative.
Tell the staffer who answers: "Hello, I'm _______, a constituent of Representative ______. Please tell him/her to vote FOR the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill. It rejects cuts proposed by the President and instead makes modest gains in education, home energy aid, employment programs, and public health. A vote for this bill is in our district's interest."

Why your call matters. The President has threatened to veto funding that exceeds his proposals - and his proposals sharply reduce job training, home heating and cooling aid, mental health care, nutrition for the elderly, rural health and other community services, while letting inflation shrink early childhood education and afterschool care, and many vital public health and education programs. After a final bill is worked out between the House and Senate, it will take a two-thirds vote in each body to reject a presidential veto. A strong vote in the House now might discourage a veto; if not, it will help us demand consistent support for these critical needs.

Why your call matters even if you're pretty sure your Rep. will vote the right way. Every Member of Congress needs to know people care about funding for basic services. We want to be able to say that many thousands nationwide cared enough to call.

No - we can't chain you to your phone. But hey - in 5 minutes you can send a message that pushes Congress towards meeting human needs - the right priorities.

Please forward this message to everyone you know.

The toll-free number is provided courtesy of the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization whose work for social justice, peace, and humanitarian service includes campaigns for a moral budget and a fair minimum wage (http://www.afsc.org/economic-justice/). AFSC welcomes groups to circulate and use the toll-free number to support specific policies that promote economic justice and human rights, and without linking the alert to a website soliciting donations or actions which may be used to support partisan lobbying or work.
