5. I'm watching, and I don't see Durbin on the floor waiting for his belly to be scratched. |
|
Where do you get that "getting Durbin to agree" business?
He's not agreeing.
It's a colloquy. Each side puts forward their arguments. Reasonably.
We're so attuned to screaming talk fests, I guess, that if there isn't any rudeness, we project it?

10. What, that the 'terrists' would hang around there after we left? |
|
Sure they would--but, really, who gives a shit. That's not our problem. They wouldn't leave, because they're fighting the REAL war over there.
They've come from Saudi Arabia to push back against those Heathen Shi'as, and protect the Sunni minority in Iraq. We're just in the damned way.
When Cheney was summoned to SA awhile ago, he was told in no uncertain terms by the Crown Prince that the US needed to protect those minority Sunnis who were being butchered in retribution for the excesses of Saddam and his cohorts by Shi'as, and if they didn't, well, someone else would. The "someone else" is these guys--blowing up Shi'a markets, going into Shi'a neighborhoods, taking out Shi'a clergy and politicians. And, of course, Mosques.
That's what many of these "terrists" are doing--targeting Shi'as who are targeting Sunnis. Iranians are coming over the border and blowing up Sunnis, and US, because they think we're not being evenhanded and are protecting the Sunnis, even though we aren't.
It's a Holy War between the Sunnis, who are guardians of the Holy Places, and the upstart sect-ish Shi'as, who are viewed by Sunnis as a heathenish bunch who have perverted the Sunni version of Islam by their differing views about who are the descendants of the Prophet (among other things).
It's already started. Like I said, we're just in the damned way.

3. They're having a colloquy!!!! |
|
LBJ used to use these all the time when he was the Majority Leader.
He'd have one guy get up and tout something, and someone else get up and have problems with it--then the second guy would ask questions, and ultimately, over time "be convinced." It was a little sideshow that anyone who read the Congressional Record (and people did, before CSPAN) could read and say, WOW, look at those arguments, and SoAndSo even managed to CONVINCE SuchAndSuch!
I don't think this is happening in the LBJ way here, but it's respectful, and it is doing the job of getting the reasoning out there.
This is what Democracy looks like. It's been so long since I've seen a good one of these!
