Reid and Durbin on Senate Republicans
by mcjoan
Mon Jul 16, 2007 at 02:48:46 PM PDT

Harry Reid:

"I would like to inform the Republican leadership and all my colleagues that we have no intention of backing down. If Republicans do not allow a vote on Levin-Reed today or tomorrow, we will work straight through the night on Tuesday. The American people deserve an open and honest debate on this war, and they deserve an up-or-down vote on this amendment to end it.

"Given the Republican leadership's decision to block the amendment, we have no choice but to do everything we can in the coming days to highlight Republican obstruction. We do this in hopes of ultimately getting a simple up-or-down vote on this and other important amendments that could change the direction of the war."

Dick Durbin:

"The Republican leadership has established hurdles and blockades, everything they can find to stop us from a vote that reflects the feelings of the American people. You know why? They're afraid of what the American people want. They're afraid the American people might prevail."

5. You know it it OK for the Repugs to do this....
Hell, Vitter can claim doody-diaper fetish as a 'family and private matter' whereas
Bill was made a spectacle of to the tune of 40 million tax payer dollars.

1346101, Here's What McConnell's Holding Up...
Posted by KharmaTrain on Mon Jul-16-07 10:44 AM

KagroX does another great analysis of the constipation pit known as the Senate and how 10 obstructionist Repugnicans are creating a stonewall between this regime and reality and the American people:

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/7/16/7382/34602

Most notable are all the bills passed out by the House that are sitting in limbo and being held hostage by McConnell, Liebermann and Rove in an attempt to make the House look ineffective and prevent boooshie from having to veto bills that could further hurt his corrupt party's chances next year:

The College Cost Reduction Act - H.R. 2669
Homeland Security Appropriations - H.R. 2638
State-Foreign Operations Appropriations - H.R. 2764
Interior-Environment Appropriations - H.R. 2643
The Energy Price Gouging Act – H.R. 1252
The No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels (NOPEC) Act - H.R. 2264
FY 2008 Defense Authorization Bill - H.R. 1585
FY 2008 Homeland Security Authorization - H.R. 1684
Hate Crimes Prevention Act – H.R. 1592
D.C. Voting Rights Act – H.R. 1905
Rail and Mass Transit Security Act - H.R. 1401
Presidential Records Act Amendments of 2007 - H.R. 1255
Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act of 2007 - H.R. 985
Reauthorizing Clean Water State Revolving Loan Fund - H.R. 720
Employee Free Choice Act - H.R. 800
Requiring Medicare to Negotiate Lower Prescription Drug Prices - H.R. 4

booshie promises to veto 60% of all the work the Senate is doing...and it's high time to call this asshat's bluff. But it requires pressure on obstructionist Repugnicans, standing up strong with Democrats like Feingold and, yes, Reid, in breaking down the stonewall through raising the noise level on our front.

Repugnicans can't get away with talking one thing when cameras are on and voting the other when Rove cracks the whip. Democrats are far from perfect and there will come a time to challenge Democrats who aren't "Progressive" enough. Let's demand up or down Senate votes...thus forcing Repugnicans to make the hard choice of the Constitution and supporting legislation a majority of the voters in next year favors...or ride the boooosh trainwreck into political oblivion.

Cheers...

7. The American people will not prevail...
Does the word veto mean anything? We have us a Decider (Dictator) and that is who will Prevail.

9. Does the word override mean anything?
I predict that it will get so hot for the repuke senators up for re-election that they will have to vote to override any veto Bush makes.

14. Impeachment will be next
Hope for it to happen! After 1972, I was afraid that Nixon would get away with it--and then the whole sordid mess came out BECAUSE the republicans in political office bowed to the pressure coming from their constituents.

10. probably
but unless we go outside the system, the most we can do is put them in a great big spotlight when they do shit - make them filibuster; make him veto.

A lot of "The American People" need to really have it demonstrated to them. Some of those pugs could eventually find their offices blockaded by angry mobs. There could be marches on Washington to rival the VN era. But as long as the "polite" tack is taken, as long as the "oh what's the use"
approach prevails, then 70% of the population will stay oblivious

I'm not saying publicity WILL get people into the streets, but lack of it sure won't

More say than an Impeachment Trial?

18. the difference is
if they see an impeachment trial with dems piling on, they get defensive toward "their" pres, root for "their" senator

if they see THEIR senator being an asshole filibustering, their pres vetoing every damned thing that comes his way, they start to "get it"

get that public sentiment harder over, qith those mobs I described, and THEN impeach

you are right about what is more sensational, but throwing the sensational "battle of titans" before the still-oblivious would have more risk

a few weeks of contempt, filibuster, and veto should be a good warm-up act to get the crowd in the right mood- then the august break where the people can beat up on them, then september - bush could find its an even bigger month than he thought

17. Yep the same American people that the MSM never seems to mention
In the past three years, whenever * takes the center stage (or side stage for that matter)
he is treated like the Majestic Martyr. I almost expect to find him in a lion's costume and referred to as "Aslan"

He is beleagured according to MSM. he is heroically fighting an uphill battle.

And whenever he prevails, the newsrooms celebrate. "Today President Bush again succeeded in using his powers to veto"

But fianlly last week the S%$t hit the proverbial. This malignant force that has long pestered and mocked and deplorably attempted to curb the Majestic One's Power, that force was finally named.

And the name was not Valdemor. The name was The American People.

Hopefully that turning tide inside the newsrooms will prevail.
