Warning, shocking video. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=d8a_1180675064Looks like they've lost all fear of the coalition. It's long past time to leave there.

1. I don't think I can go there. And yes, it's long past time. |

5. It's a very nasty little weapon |
|
The "thermal bomb" is, in reality, the Soviet RKG-3 (ruchnaya kumul'naya granata, or hand-thrown shaped-charge grenade) antitank hand grenade.
This is kind of a slick weapon. It was invented in World War II to take out Panzers and it looks like a potato masher. You throw this device and four little drogues come out the side of it, which ensure the device will land on the tank with the business end facing down. When it goes off, it shoots a jet of superheated gas (a plasma) against the tank's hull and burns right through it. And if you were a REAL badass and hit the ammunition storage cabinet or the gas tank, you'd blow the shit out of the tank.
In Iraq the bad guys don't have all that many tanks to deal with, so they take advantage of another characteristic of the weapon: if it goes off when it's NOT sitting on a tank, it produces a very hard shock wave that, in a closed space like a vehicle or a room, will liquify the internal organs of all those around it.

Those Iraqis are attacking disembodied symbols of an occupation. Does it make you proud to see US humvees there? Not me.

That's just fucking nuts.
Of course, if the Humvee isn't equipped with hatch gunner armor, then nobody rides the hatch gun, since they also have bombs in the fucking trees and light posts, take your head right off. And besides, you can't preemptively shoot at every group of guys hanging out on the side of the road, unless you want to produce even more resentment and insurgency. Which is, of course, the point. Quite a dilemma.

6. You're absolutely right its a dilemma, what is the defense from attacks like this? |
|
Edited on Tue Jul-17-07 01:06 AM by Phrogman
I had never seen or heard of anything this brazen.
What can you do to defend against this type of attack?
And they're NOT suicidal attacks, these boys will disappear into the crowd and come right back tomorrow to do it again.
