CREW filed a Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint today against the Republican Party of Minnesota and its former treasurer, Marina Taubenberger, alleging multiple egregious violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) and FEC regulations. The complaint is based primarily upon a February 15, 2007 confidential memorandum from former Republican Party of Minnesota finance director Dwight Tostenson to the Party's Executive Committee. You really have to read that memo. Here it is:

That's some serious misconduct by the MN GOP. It should be prosecuted and people should go straight to jail for this type of thing.

It's horrifyingly shitty to treat your own people that way. I imagine the spin on this for us could be "if they screw over their own loyal staff for a few bucks, imagine what they'll do to the taxpayers!"

State GOP spokesman Mark Drake said on Monday that the party is confident it's taking all necessary steps to comply with FEC regulations.

Drake also accused Sloan of being a shill for Al Franken, a DFL candidate for the seat held by U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman, a Republican. "This is obviously a politically motivated attack from a left-wing Al Franken flunky who is trying to silence the Republican Party of Minnesota," Drake said in an e-mail.

"CREW executive director Melanie Sloan is a former Democratic counsel for the House Judiciary Committee and a longtime Al Franken crony who has appeared on his show repeatedly to attack Republicans," Drake wrote. "Sloan was such a lackey on Franken's radio show that she was given her own theme music set to 'Bad to the Bone.' "
