Voting For Leaders

I'm not looking for a leader to vote for, I'm looking for a representative.

1. I agree to an extent.

As an adult, I don't need or want or need to be led. "Leadership" is important to me only with respect to a candidate's ability to build consensus on public policy measures: a good person can win a Senate or House seat and "represent" my concerns all day long, but if he/she can't build consensus for change and/or influence other lawmakers, I don't feel well-represented.

2. If we could move to direct vote on issues, would you support that?

I mean the means are pretty close to being in our hands; once a day on the TV, there's a few votes for those who want to participate (American Idol and the like). What if we eliminated the legislative branch in favor of a direct vote on bills and proposals? Assuming we could work out all the kinks (i.e. potential for fraud, removing bias in presenting the bills, so on and so forth), would that be preferable to our current system of having representatives?
