Poll question: Should people choose to be organ donors?
I mean assuming no government coercion, and assuming their organs are in reasonably good condition, is it a good idea for people to choose to be organ donors.

I'm just curious because this seems to have been flagged up and I don't get it myself.

1. as someone who has received a tissue donation I encourage
people to donate.

In my case it saved me a great deal of pain and helped me keep my teeth. (I had gum transplants)...

Mine was the simplest of situations...there are folks who live in the shadow of death and if sadly someone else loses a loved one and that dear departed soul's body could be of use ...why not?

5. Gum transplants?
I never heard of such a thing. Glad it helped you though.

10. after my pregnancies my gums receded to a level that meant I might lose my teeth
it was painful to even brush my teeth or eat...

The doctor took tissue grafts that had been donated and built my gums back up...and they look perfectly natural...

It was a painful procedure...but I am so glad I had it done and I am glad that someone donated that tissue.

In some cases they can take the graft from the roof of your own mouth but it makes the whole ordeal more painful and was not an option for me.

3. That's the standard?
That seems pretty weak to me; rather I find myself admiring people who do things that aren't very comfortable.

6. His comment
about doing something that is comforting is not the same as you admiring people who go outside of their 'safe zone'. Different strokes for different folks.

18. Maybe so, but each of us has the right to chose.
Feel free to educate people to your way of thinking that is great. Advertise, educate even enlist the Docs in teaching their patients but in the end each one has the right to chose. Peace, Kim

4. I voted 'absolutely'...
...and now I'm not sure what that meant.

Should people donate their organs? Absolutely!

Should people have the right to not donate their organs? Absolutely!

Should the government require you to donate your organs? Absolutely not!

7. That's why I included the bit about no government coercion
And phrased it should people choose to be organ donors, rather than should people be organ donors.

11. I can't imagine why
even someone who is personally against donating his own organs would not be in favor of people, in general, donating their organs. Are there any religious sects against donating organs?

13. I think there are a few; on the theory that you would be resurrected
without them? Such sects tend to be against cremation as well. I could be wrong.

8. A More interesting poll may have been "Are You A Donor?"
With an appropriate set of answerers including that you might be in a state where your license doesn't state you are one or no other mechanism of identifying yourself exists.

To parallel that quote I've been seeing by Britains chief Medical Officer.

Of course, he doesn't need one because Cheney's arm fits up his a$$ just fine...

with card carriers because they want to harvest their organs. For that reason I don't carry a card.

21. No of course it doesn't
Unless I were to say that the government or some other body should force them to do as I think they should do. People are free to do whatever they want, and I am free to have an opinion on what they should do.

20. Another Push Poll?
bu-jeezus.

Look, if you don't want telemarketers bothering you, you get on the "do not call" list.

If you don't want to donate, you get on the "do not donate" list.

Most of the debate i saw from that thread was what should be the default choice.
