President Bush recently passed the buck on Iraqi problems to General Tommy Franks, saying it was all Franks’ fault that things had gone wrong. Yet, over a year after the invasion took place, Bush awarded General Franks the prestigious Medal of Freedom. And, before the war, when General Shinseki said it would take 400,000 to 500,000 troops to secure Iraq, he was unceremoniously dumped because his idea ran counter to Bush’s idea of a small footprint. Later, when top generals opposed the Bush-Lieberman escalation plan, Bush fired the top two generals and replaced them with General Petraeus, one of the few generals more amenable to their radical plan. Now, when General Petraeus reports to Congress in September on the occupation’s progress, he has two options: one is to tell the truth and get fired and the other is to lie to Congress and say what the president wants him to say.
