Maj. Gen. In Iraq: "We're Concerned About Tet Offensive Affecting Debate In Washington"
Fears of a Tet Offensive in Iraq
By MARK KUKIS/BAGHDAD
Mon Jul 16, 1:30 PM ET

The U.S. commanders in Iraq seem to sense some new horror for the country is near. On July 7, Gen. David Petraeus predicted that insurgents would lash out with spectacular attacks in the coming weeks, as the clock runs down on time ahead of the September progress report due in Washington. And yesterday Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, the commander of U.S. forces in southern Iraq, echoed the fear when talking to reporters in the Green Zone. "We're concerned about some kind of Tet offensive that's going to affect the debate in Washington," Lynch said, harking back to the pivotal 1968 push by communist forces in Vietnam.

2. One of the reasons Tet was so successful ...
Edited on Tue Jul-17-07 10:37 AM by Jim__
... was that Gen. Westmoreland came back to the US for the Thanksgiving, Christmas '67 period and repeatedly announced that the VC were incapable of launching a major attack in the interior of Vietnam. Tet was a large number of major attacks launched simultaneously throughout the interior of Vietnam. Tet clearly demonstrated that Westmoreland had no real understanding of what was going on in Vietnam.

If the generals are fearful of an Tet-like attack in Iraq, its an admission that they don't really know the state of the war in Iraq.

3. Affect the debate in Washington?
Is Maj. Gen Rick Lynch an idiot or just a heartless partisan? What about the welfare of your soldiers and the Iraqi citzens you're supposed to be helping, sir? Where is your concern for them?
