Sen. Trent Lott : “Filibustering is wrong. It’s not supportable under the Constitution.

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/07/17/filibuster-conservatives/

Tonight, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) will keep the Senate “working through the night” in an effort to force conservatives to stand and filibuster the Levin/Reed plan for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.

The same conservatives filibustering tonight were singing a different tune two years ago. When Democrats held up the confirmation of a few of President Bush’s right-wing judicial nominees, conservatives repeatedly complained of “obstructionism.”

Senate conservatives had threatened to deploy the “nuclear option,” which would have eliminated the traditional Senate practice of filibustering.

Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS): “Filibustering is wrong. It’s not supportable under the Constitution. And if they insist on persisting with these filibusters, I’m perfectly prepared to blow the place up.”

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) spokesman: “Senator McConnell always has and continues to fully support the use of what has become known as the ‘’ option in order to restore the norms and traditions of the Senate.”

See, a filibuster is only evil when it thwarts the Republics.

5. Just so people are aware of what the response to the hypocrisy charge will be....
... They're gonna say something like "I was talking about JUDICIAL advice/consent filibustering there. That's not what we're dealing with here, which is the filibustering of LEGISLATION."

Of course it's bullshit - but it can be nice to know what they're going to say ahead of time.

8. I don't know why my neighbors keep voting for Lott.
Most of them voted for Lott. It seems the only people voting for Erik Fleming who ran against him in 2006 were leftist white people and most of the black community.

It'll be a beautiful new house.

Those poor black people whose houses were destroyed? What poor black people? Huh, what...who? What happened, where am I? Karl, get a couple black girls over there for me, pay 'em good, tell 'em to put their arms around me and smile, only for a minute though.

These people do not represent us, even though we live in their districts. They only listen to their party. They are pigs.

25. I do like your Governor
My wife is from Kansas and her dearly departed Dad was a WWII Army veteran, a Purple Heart recipient and a lifelong democrat. I think republicans angered him more then the German Army. Bring up Bob Dole and his blood pressure would reach dangerous levels.

We love our governor. Maybe she will be a VP candidate someday. Our senators, though, are complicit in most of this misadministration's messes.

so no need to apologize for anything. The last good thing this state did was have Trent trip himself up during Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party.

18. Say, didn't his hero Strom do a filibuster once?
Why, yes, now I remember:

WASHINGTON — Fortified with a good rest, a steam bath and a sirloin steak, Sen. Strom Thurmond talked against a 1957 civil rights bill for 24 hours and 18 minutes — longer than anyone has ever talked about anything in Congress.

The South Carolina senator, then a Democrat, opened his one-man filibuster on Aug. 28, 1957, at 8:54 p.m. against the bill, which he said was unconstitutional and "cruel and unusual punishment."

Republican leader Sen. William Knowland of California retorted that Thurmond's endless speech was cruel and unusual punishment to his colleagues.

27. the repubs always drew a distinction between filibustering judicial noms and legislation
Their argument was not that filibustering was unconstitutional per se but rather that filibustering judicial nominees was. Of course, that argument is complete BS.
