The Best and Only True Weapon Against Global Warming and Dependence on Foreign Oil: CONSERVATION |
|
There's no really true alternative fuel source on the near horizon. If there were, our foreign competitors would have found it by now. Thus, the best and only way to fight global warming and lower our dependence on foreign oil is through conservation of the energy that we have.
We need:
A higher gas tax More subsidies for mass transit Higher fuel efficiency on cars and trucks Corporate tax incentives to either cut back the work week to 4 days and/or allow workers to telecommute Urban areas need a car congestion tax
Anyone have any other ideas?

1. peak power pricing, meaning |
|
Edited on Tue Jul-17-07 01:56 PM by greenman3610
you pay more for using power at "peak hours".
Feed in Tariff, = guaranteed price structure for developers of renewable power projects, encouraging development of alternative energy
Remove subsidies to non renewable power sources
mandate lighting standards favoring CF and LED lighting
adopt standards mandating "grid friendly" appliances that adjust to strains on the power grid by shutting down for brief periods, ie air conditioners and refrigerators. ( beer stays cold, but fewer "peak" power plants needed)
-- conservation is not the only weapon, but is is the quickest, cheapest, most widely available.

3. The French have a vast nuclear power industry. |
|
I believe they are currently generating 75% of their electricity from 56 nukes.
I've always felt that was stupid to waste petroleum on stationary objects like buildings. The whole lure of petrol is that it has a very high energy density and is very safe to transport. Why waste it on building, which can be powered by wind, solar and nuclear sources?
