Uncle Walter, John Chancellor, and Huntley & Brinkley did not tell us what to think. They did not editorialize.
They reported what went on, they told us the day's news...they showed us the pictures. they did not roll their eyes.. they did not make faces.. they did not wink/wink/nod/nod each other.
they read the news from a piece of paper in front of them... they rolled tape.. they did not have swooshing graphics & thuds.. or a three-way crawl.. they did not punctuate each segment with a second-to-second update on the stock market.. there was no rat-ta-ta-tat militaristic soundtrack rolling in the background.. they did not wear flags in their lapels.
they read us the news of the day, and if something they said affected us, it was easy enough to follow it up by reading editorials in Time , Newsweek, or US & World report.. or our own newspaper.
Meet the Press & the other Sunday shows were venues for people in the news to put flesh on the bones of weekday stories.
People were more informed back then, because they piqued our interest and we did the follow-up research. They did not TELL us what to think about a news story. they just served it to us.. they did not chew it up and regurgiate it into our gullets.

1. Our media is gone. It;s over. It's lost. News became profit and truth was the victim. |
