4. Well, yeah. I don't like any conservative dems. |
|
The nice thing about the Office of the Vice President is they don't do anything. So Gore could balance the ticket, and put Joe where he wouldn't do any harm.
Of course, he had no way of knowing how batshit insane Lieberman would end up in the last seven years.

36. The Vice President is becoming more and more influential... |
|
Obviously the next Vice President isn't going to be as influential as Cheney (nor should he be). But when Gore was VP, he really shaped a model for future Vice Presidents as a key advisor to the President. Perhaps most importantly, as the only advisor besides the President's wife, that the President can't fire. This means that they are able to stand up to the President and tell him he's wrong when others might be afraid to.
Also, the other obvious thing to point out is that Presidents are mortal. The Republicans learned that the hard way when William McKinley was assassinated.

idea who this lieberman was. I was willing to like him but as the months went by he was boring me to tears..little saboteur that he is.
I think Gore's "advisors" had a big part in lieman..maybe Al will write a book about that someday when all this other shyte is fixed.

Not that I believe Chuck Schumer is one. I like the guy. Not fond of the DLC. Just the same,
The word is loser, not looser. Please. I beg you all. I fear for the future of this word.

5. Well ... I guess everyone makes that one big mistake in their life: |
|
Gore's was Lieberman.
On the bright side, Gore got his "big mistake" out of the way, so if he ever does become president, we wouldn't have to worry about it. ;-)

and he was right. I think Lieberman has changed since 2000. He wasn't the smuck then that he has become. Maybe his support of AIPAC wasn't as dangerous then as it is now. Or perhaps it was, and we just didn't realize it.

Graham would have been a much better choice and that choice wouldn't have been haunting Gore and the D's now. Lieberman looks like a ghost and he haunts like one.

I'm not sure he will be the selection - depends on who gets the nomination. I honestly see Florida going Dem (especially if the votes are counted correctly) no matter whose on the ticket. This administration has not done well by the retired. I think the big L appealed to both the Jewish population and the retired; that is before he became so cloudy.

Surprisingly for someone who has such a distinguished public service career, he's not all that popular. The only reason he did so well last time is because nobody likes Katherine Harris. If he'd had a real challenger, he would've been in for the fight of his life.
IMO, Bob Graham would've been a good choice for a running mate for both Gore and Kerry.

20. It's not much remembered now but there was a lot of initial enthusiasm for that ticket |
|
because it was a historic first--a Jew on the national ticket--and Lieberman initially made a good impression. Their polls improved. Now, I'm not talking about the hard left but among Dems and Ind as a whole it was considered a good choice. The reason why Gore chose Lieberman was because of the Clinton scandals and they felt they needed somebody who was squeeky clean and a dem who spoke out against Clinton strongly yet voted against impeachment--Lieberman fit the bill. Of course Lieberman now is a national scold who considers himself the only man of conscience in politics.

34. Foreign Policy wasn't on the top of the agenda in 2000... |
|
Edited on Wed Jul-18-07 08:42 PM by Hippo_Tron
And until it became the top of the agenda, we didn't realize just how much of a right winger Lieberman was.
Lieberman fit into Gore's strategy for two reasons
1) Gore wanted to distance himself from Clinton, and Lieberman was quick to condemn Clinton
2) Jewish voters, particularly in Florida
IMO, he should've picked Russ Feingold. Russ would've done both of those things and prevented a lot of people from voting for Nader.
BTW, I think that Gore made it pretty clear that he regretted his choice when he endorsed Howard Dean in 2004.
