OMG.....it's absolutely insane having so many fricken
buildings so close to the runway where that plane crashed in Brazil.

Especially since there's no room for error on that relatively short runway.

Look how close everything is!--------->

How sad. :(

1. Wow, yeah that is insane a lot of people would be alive if there was just a field there.
Might be an interesting educational experience for the 9/11 planes-hitting-buildings ameteur engineer crowd though.

8. São Paulo is huge
approx. 20 million people crammed into what is growing into a megapolis. There is another airport further out (Guarulhos Int.), and it would surprise me if a third is in the works.

They would have to knock down a lot of buildings to add a field to Congonhas now, displacing about 9,000 people, just to extend one end of the runway. Double that for the other side.

11. It is indeed. I've flown out of that airport on a domestic flight, and it
scared me to death how close in all the buildings were. I'm so happy I flew on a clear day.

2. The runway was under construction.
They were going to add a surface layer at the end of this week which prevents it from being too slick when it rains. :(

Tadinhos!

Fiery plane crash at Sao Paulo airport kills at least 200

SAO PAULO, Brazil (CNN) -- Heavy black smoke poured into the air and bright orange flames lit the night sky in Sao Paulo after a passenger plane skidded across a road and crashed into a building Tuesday. At least 200 people were killed.

A TAM Airlines Airbus 320 carrying 176 people crashed while attempting to land in heavy rain at Sao Paulo's Congonhas Airport, the airline said.

The Sao Paulo fire department said at least 200 people, including some on the ground, were dead at the scene.

5. looks kind of like the San Diego airport
Hubby jokes that one could walk out on a wing and order a hamburger while the plane is coming in... I also gather that the Hong Kong airport is much the same- right in the middle of things.

17. The old Hong Kong airport (Kai Tak) was an insane place to land...
Imagine siting JFK right in the middle of Central Park, and you still would have a lot more distance from buildings than Kai Tak. It closed a couple of years ago, and the new airport is farther out.

Agreed about Lindbergh Field in San Diego, though. I've flown into that place many times, and each time it felt like we were certain to hit a building on final approach.

They built and are building runways right next to neighborhoods!

But not to minimize that it's really a terrible thing that happened there. :(

A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 rests at the intersection
of West 55th Street and Central Ave., after it skidded off
the runway while trying to land in heavy snow in Chicago,

By CARLA K. JOHNSON
Associated Press Writer

A jetliner trying to land in heavy snow slid off a runway, crashed through a fence and slid into a busy street, hitting one vehicle and pinning another beneath it.

A 6-year-old boy in one of the vehicles was killed, authorities said. He was among eight people hurt on the ground. Two passengers on the plane suffered minor injuries, Aviation Department spokeswoman Wendy Abrams said.

Southwest Airlines Flight 1248 from Baltimore was landing at Midway International Airport with 98 passengers and five crew around 7:15 Thursday night when it slid through the fence.

The airport area had 7 inches of snow, but Abrams said runway conditions at the time were acceptable.

14. What's nuts is attempting to land in these city airports
in bad weather. Put simply the airlines' bottom line is given more weight than the lives of those on aircraft or living nearby.

This is a horrible tragedy.

You flew so close to buildings, you could see people in their apartments. It was nuts.

It's closed now, but was quite a thrill ride.

15. Thanks for the video
I guess I should have known with youtube there is a video of everything. The first time I landed there I wasn't aware of how low and close we'd fly. It was amazing from a window seat.

19. Another crazy place to land...
...is Princess Juliana Airport in St. Maartin. Not because there are any buildings, but because there's so little space for a runway that planes have to come in only about thirty feet over the fence at the end of the airport. One unexpected downdraft, and you'd tear off your gear on the fence.

21. And, of course...
...there was one major, and tragic, incident back in 1985 when a Delta L-1011 came down short of the runway. Many fatalities, including Phillip Estridge, the inventor of the (IBM) PC.

22. Often times the cities move to encircle the airports
What used to be wilderness with a runway turns into a suburb with a runway.

And of course, all the suburbanites continually bitch about the noise.

But look at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. It's in Bloomington, immediately adjacent to the new Ikea store and a little place called the Mall of America. I was at Ikea on Sunday and my kid and I stood at a window and watched the planes fly past, level with us, before touching down on the runway.

If one of those 757s or A320s plows into the MoA... ooch. 40 million people visit there annually, or about 100,000 per day on average. It employs 12,000 people, too, so you're looking at twice the occupancy of the Twin Towers.

But back to my point... the airfield has been there since the early 1920s. The MoA was built in 1992. The Ikea store was I think 2005. So the creep is pretty rampant.
