President of Bahamas Christian Council calls for Govt to start hanging prisoners sentenced to death

Peace in the Bahamas
The President of the Bahamas Christian Council Bishop John Humes has called for the government to start hanging prisoners sentenced to death.

The good bishop said a mouthful when he said that: "This country is run by the government and of course, our Constitution. Our Constitution says that once a person is found guilty of murder and the court says he should be {hanged}, and the court gives them an opportunity to appeal, once that is done, then the law should be administered."

The Constitution of the Bahamas says no such thing. What it does say – however – has all to do with seeing to it that those who are charged have a chance to have a fair trial and after that they should be duly sentenced.

<snip>

The good pastor also said some equally provocative remarks when he noted that "the people put the government in place and if the government doesn’t listen to the people then they wouldn’t be around. The word of God says that ‘thou shall not kill’, but it also says that ‘those who kill should also be prepared to die’.

<snip>

As in the days of Micah the prophet, so today in a Bahamas from which love of neighbour seems to have fled. Today’s Bahamas is a cold, hard-edged cruel place.
