May I ask a really DUMB question?

The Repubicans want to wait until September to debate any changes.

The month before Spetember, as I recall, is August.

During the month of August, the Iraqi parliament is taking a vacation.

So, what exactly is the point of waiting?

1. Welll
That is a puzzler - but i suspect two things. The bush Administration actually isn't keen on the vacation, and they would argue that the security/military component of the Surge will take until then for the benefits to fully materialize.

2. Ask A Dumb Question. . .
Edited on Wed Jul-18-07 09:51 AM by ProfessorGAC
. . .and you'll get a dumb answer! So, here's my dumb answer: I dunno.

In reality, it's a stall tactic to play to their base that they're getting in the dems way. But, they know the wind is blowing in that direction, so be waiting it looks good accomplishes nothing, and they don't have to stand in Silverspoon's corner.

3. I don't think the insurgents have a vacation pencilled in....
... I think the September Friedman unit is the amalgamation of 2 things: (1) The standard 6 month Friedman unit, and (2) Time for the escalation to work against the insurgents.

That's my understanding, at any rate.

4. For the same reason people don't answer the phone when debt collectors call
EVen if they have the money they don't want to hear all the bad news.

Same thing here. Huge bill to pay and they know it.

BTW I don't believe a word of the Anbar province crap. Basically they pick a remote area that the news guys would never come near and create their own reports about how great everything is suddenly going. T

Truth be told the most likely scenerio is this (with the first top level acknowledgement of actual counter insurgency tactics actually being initiated)

1.Petreus paid everyone off (as mentioned in "Fiasco")
2. They (the Iraqis) are just using American muscle to get alQaeda in Iraq's hands out of the goodie bag.
3. some mixture of #'s 1 and 2 with a whole lot of DoD B.S. thrown in.

The Pentagon has developed its own direct spin line to RW talkradio and the conservative blogosphere

This completely coincides with this sudden new found success.

5. The GOP Will Say Anything to Delay the Inevitable
which is why it's inevitable. They've lost and wasted every opportunity to steer change. Now they will be driven by Change, instead of the other way around.

6. MTP was discussing this on sunday
the answer is, the more time they have the more they can create propoganda that things in iraq are great.

11. Ding! Ding! Ding! You win the $100,000 question! The Repugs are
betting on the fact that their constituents don't have a clue about the Iraqi Congress taking off for August.

12. Because they believe that..
everyone will be busy with school and other things and won't pay attention. They will use it somehow to coincide with 911. They are also holding there debate on CNN in september for some of these reasons also.
