Leave it to Republicans in Utah. *sigh*

State leaders pass on Moore's 'Sicko' prescription for health care system

By Kirsten Stewart and Lisa Rosetta

Article Last Updated:07/18/2007 07:52:47 AM MDT

Utah Rep. Carl Wimmer skipped Tuesday's free screening of "Sicko," Michael Moore's documentary on the failings of America's health care system.

The Herriman Republican had spent his day drumming up donations for his younger brother, who has no health coverage to pay for expensive cancer treatments.

Though personally touched by the plight of the nation's uninsured and underinsured, Wimmer has "no interest" in the movie, which he doubts will drive reform.

"Michael Moore's movies are full of lies and half-truths and I don't see how this will be any different," said Wimmer. "Until we have a firm grasp on the problem, I don't think anyone will be able to solve it."

The free screening was arranged by physician and attorney Clark Newhall, who had invited more than 100 state leaders. The no-shows included Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., dozens of state lawmakers, the president of the Utah Medical Association, and the CEOs of Intermountain Health Care and Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah.

Among the handful who did attend: state insurance commissioner Kent Michie and two lawmakers, Democratic Reps. David Litvack of Salt Lake City and Larry Wiley of West Valley City.

The lackluster attendance may seem surprising considering health care - or how to pay for it - is emerging as the top domestic issue in the 2008 presidential campaign. But it signals just how complex and politically polarizing the debate has become.

And here's a real treat in this article:

Ogden Republican Rep. Brad Dee declined, saying: "I don't wish to support a filmmaker cut from the same cloth as Joseph Goebbels. The solution to our health care system is not socialism, which has never been successful in the long run."

Take note, Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy!
What you have does not work, because "NOBODY yet has a firm grasp on the problem." That's right, nobody. You heard the man, don't act like you didn't. Oh you may think you have this healthcare thing all figured out, with equal access for all and costs under control--but you don't. Surprised? I'll bet you are!
I know these things because I am an American, from the heartland of the Homeland, and never travel more than 2 states away from my home.

But then, the definition of "socialism" in this country seems to be along the lines of "BOOGABOOGABOOGA!"

21. Repukes are ALLOWED to make comparisons that have no basis in fact.
Just like Republicans are ALLOWED to start oil wars that have no basis in fact.

You get where this is going.

Unfortunately, they always always ALWAYS seem to have JUST enough people 'round Presidential election time that can't put 2 and 2 together like we can.

16. Does Rep. Dee refuse to
Edited on Wed Jul-18-07 10:42 AM by LibDemAlways
patronize the public library?

call the police or fire department in an emergency?

support public education?

As Michael Moore pointed out in 9/11, these agencies all serve the collective public good, as do the court system, post office, highway system, among many others.

Does Rep. Dee insist that his elderly relatives not accept their Social Security checks and Medicare payments? Does he personally pay their bills on principle?

Is Rep. Dee too stupid to realize that his salary as a "public" servant is paid for collectively by the taxpayers? Love how elected repuke officials, who collect a public paycheck and public health and pension benefits, rail against the government. Such hypocrites.

I'd say Dee is exactly the sort of person who should watch the movie. Shame he's too much of a dumbshit to do so.

19. Taking a page out of Goebbel's paybook, Utah Rep. Carl Wimmer told the big lie
that Republicans keep telling. They think that if they tell it often enough, it will become "truth."

Sadly for them, Michael Moore is able to deflect their "truth" with real honest-to-goodness TRUTH (no quotation marks needed) and was even able to get CNN to admit that their "truth" was no match for the TRUTH that Michael Moore tells.

"Michael Moore's movies are full of lies and half-truths and I don't see how this will be any different," said Wimmer. "Until we have a firm grasp on the problem, I don't think anyone will be able to solve it."

Edited on Wed Jul-18-07 01:46 PM by sshan2525

Representative Brad Dee,
Utah State Legislature

Dear Representative Dee,

Please read this carefully and slowly so you don't misunderstand what I am saying and muddle it up later as you seem wont to do on other issues. It's apparent that you have some sort of learning disability due to your breathtaking lack of knowledge evident in this quote: "I don't wish to support a filmmaker cut from the same cloth as Joseph Goebbels. The solution to our health care system is not socialism, which has never been successful in the long run."

First, Joseph Goebbels was a Nazi not a socialist. I realize that the Nazis were also known as National Socialists but they really were fascists. Honest. I'm not kidding. Ask any Russian who lived in a real socialist country and fought the Nazis in World War II if you don't believe me. In addition, I've never heard Michael Moore claim that his race was superior to any other as Nazis always do (although I'm sure that he, like Reich Minister for Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda Goebbels, loves his Fatherland). On the other hand Mr. Moore is overweight which, as we all know, should prohibit him from commenting on any medical issues.

Second, If I'm not mistaken, Medicare fits the description of a "socialized" medical plan to a "T". No, actually I really don't think I'm mistaken. I also think that if you were to ask what the millions of older Americans think about Medicare, they'd tell you that it works pretty darn well. Oh, I suppose you could argue that it used to work pretty darn well until your party screwed around with it a couple of years ago so big pharmaceutical companies could suck as much cash out of elderly Americans as possible. My 86 year old mother has a few choice things to say about the GOP and their donut holes. Come to think of it, maybe you shouldn't ask one of them because if they were to find out you were a Republican they'd probably tell you to go "F" yourself or run you over with their Lark.

You might be better off talking to some Swedes or Norwegians about their decades long experiment with socialism. Do it quickly though because that's a long run and failure may be just around the corner. Remember, they're from Sweden or Noway not France. I know how all those lefty countries look alike to you folks.

In any case, I'd suggest some remedial study, especially in the history area before you attempt any more film reviews of movies that you haven't seen.

Finally, on behalf of most New Englanders, thank you for taking Mitt Romney back. Keep him and we promise to keep Ted Kennedy out of Utah.

Sincerely,

**********
