Pregnant Woman Says Police Mistreated Her


A Kansas City woman is shocked and angry after Independence Police stopped her recently. She said officers forced her down on the asphalt on her stomach, even after she told them she was six months pregnant.

It appears to be a case of mistaken identity. JCPenney officers were on the look-out for a Jeep Cherokee, suspected in several car break ins and stolen cars recently.

Yvette Hayes said she pulled into the JCPenney lot to wait for her sister-in-law just before 10 p.m. Friday night. She never left her car and when her sister-in-law left the store, Hayes followed her and police were hot on her heels.

"I didn't know why I was being pulled over when I saw the lights I immediately pulled over to the side," Hayes said.

Hayes is a Kansas City school principal in charge of her church's Sunday school. Her two small children were in the Jeep with her when officers started yelling at her to show her hands, drop her keys out the window, put her hands on her head and get on her knees.

Anyone in the KC area will tell you that the Independence cops are brown shirted thugs. I am glad this happened. Not because I like what the cops did but because I know this woman and she will take this as far as necessary.

This is also the second time an African American principal in the KC school district has been mistreated by cops lately. The other one was mistreated during a home invasion by cops who had the wrong address. They thought she lived in a drug house.

5. I understand that the police want to be safer

But they need to follow guidelines for when they can and can't put people on their stomachs in handcuffs.

Extreme heat or cold, pregnancy, and obesity are three situations I can think of off the top of my head where they need to do something different.

If two cops are so afraid of a woman with two kids in the car that they need to go this far when pulling her over, they may not be cop material.

Don't know if you heard but when dubya was in Greensburg, KS after the tornado in May, he had several photo ops with African Americans who were imported to Greensburg from Wichita.

That they were piped in from Wichita? I'd love to have some proof for the next time my conservative neighbors talk about the Repubs are more friendly to minorities because they appoint them to important positions in their admin, and the Dems don't.

Proof of the hypocrisy would shut them up.

13. Here's my proof:

One of my best friends grew up in Greensburg. His family still lives there. According to him, there are no African Americans in the town. So I mentioned this to another friend who had gone down to Greensburg to help with cleanup. He was working with the Mennonites and they told him the African Americans in the photo were from Wichita and came to town with the republican US congressman.

Of course there was no media coverage. And yes, we wrote the Wichita paper that published the picture, but they of course did not reply or print a story telling about the African Americans in the photo.

So you can repeat the story because it is true. But sorry, no links to support it.
