For a second, forget about Al Gore: Tell us what you do to make the world a better place.
What are the positive changes you have made in your life to make the world better. It doesnt have to be drastic, all changes count.

It would be nice to have a positive thread here.

(I will answer this in a few minutes)

3. I could go into a multitude of ways but..
they are illegal and I do not want the Feebies after me for such.
I would like to turn the clock back and put AL in the office that
is was rightfully his. I guarantee the US and the world would be
a better place for it.

4. Teach all repukes what moral values REALLY means!
Edited on Wed Jul-18-07 01:33 PM by jojo54
How to do it? Ya know, I started writing all these detailed thoughts on how I'd accomplish this, but in the end, THIS is all you have to do: make them watch all their liquid assets, stocks, international bank accounts etc., be burned in a huge pile, then make them start at the bottom, just like all the "have nots" in this country.

I'd like to think that maybe then they would know what it's like to be kind, thoughtful, compassionate and work damn hard for their money.

On edit: nice post by the way.

5. I do my best to do the things that everybody should do. I turn off lights

and electronics when I am not using them. I try to avoid wasting water. I recycle and reuse whenever possible. I've substantially reduced my driving by a combination of walking, cycling, carpooling and taking transit. I've also reduced the amount of meat that I consume both because of the environmental benefits and the health benefits.

edit: These are things that I have either started to do recently or recently made a greater effort to do.

7. I have knocked 150 Kw off the grid
150 Kw of electricity will no longer have to be generated by the power companies.
I am an electrician who works in the home remodaling business.Between using flourescent and low voltage lighting along with gettin the general contractors to use more efficient home appliances I have cut power consumption by 150 Kw in the last seven months.
It may be just a drop in the bucket but it is a start.

8. start treating people as if they matter...
'cause they do...it's the whole "do unto others" thing, writ large. You can apply it to anyone...

9. Replaced my car with a bicycle
Cars do come in handy but they're over-used. At first my decision was an economic necessity but I noticed that I prefer riding a bike to driving a car in most situations. I won't go into details about the how that's better for the world in general since that's well documented.

I also promote cycling by serving on a local committee and writing about it.

10. I'm not breeding.
I recycle, and I ride my bike everywhere instead of driving a car. I also donate to the candidates of my choice. I use the library instead of buying books (and I plan on getting my library science degree in a few years so as to help preserve the massive amounts of used paper already existing rather than thowing them away.)

Ironically, I have drastically curtailed my meat consumption over the last year, so any opposition i may have toward vegetarians is due to their tactics and not to their message. There really is something to be said for limiting the amount of meat one eats, and you don't have to be a bullying jackass to put it into practice FOR ONESELF (emphasis important).

11. Change means "Doing something new that you have not been doing before"
In that regard, I have made no changes, positive or negative.

What I am doing, and what I continue to do, is volunteer as a safer sex educator and counsellor, be active in my neighborhood association, contribute time, money and other resources to a number of charities and, at every turn, challenge the comfortable lies that people tell themselves about their society and political leaders.

I believe that I am making a positive difference through my actions.

14. Defy corporations
Refuse to let a shop search you. Don't ever give up your rights under the law.

Tell them that if they believe you have stolen something they are welcome to call the police and have you arrested. Under no circumstances let a shop believe they have the right to search your bag, your body or your pockets.

Refuse to turn your bag over. Challenge the thugs that try to intimidate you. If they say 'you only have to worry if you are guilty', as k them how they would feel about being searched on whim. Make them adhere to the law as everyone else does.

15. Put myself back in it
That alone makes the world a better place.

Alright, so I'm kidding. Seriously though, if it rains, I get wet. If it's hot, I sweat. If it's cold...well, I love cold weather. I wish it was 15 degrees and snowing. I'm getting to the point where I walk everywhere, no bus, no bike even. Not completely there yet, it's a process. It's not easy to unhook yourself. I still turn on the AC at work. My clothes are most likely made by a 7 year old girl in SE Asia, but at least I try to wear them until they disintegrate.
