Harry Reid should tell members of the Senate to clear their calendars |
|
for the rest of the summer.
If the GOP won't let the troops come home, ain't nobody going home.
Keep the Senate in DC working to end the war.
That's my only suggestion to Senator Reid.

Members of Congress need to see their constituents. Though they need to go home not just on the Iraq issue, they need to come home and see how their own people view this issue. They need to see what we do every day - that the people that put them into office are no longer supporting this war, no matter if your state or district is one populated with Democrats or Republicans. They need to see it - and then they need to act accordingly.
I don't see how dragging out gridlock through the summer does little more than force our elected representatives into a situation where they have no choice but to be even less representatives for us than they already are. And, of course, Iraq isn't the only problem we face.

They've been told over and over. They don't see us when they come home.
I've never, ever seen Dole or Burr here at home.

though you haven't seen Dole or Burr, that doesn't mean they aren't seeing people, nor does it mean they won't be driving by the increasing number of signs that support anti-war efforts.
And continual, if not perpetual, reinforcement is practically the only way anything does get done. Otherwise, they get bogged down in the messages handed to them by the President.

Coming home is an escape to them. Our representative in Congress are the ones who press the flesh.
Senators don't think that way down here.

There's little accounting for that. But there are plenty of somewhat reasonable Senators that are currently opposing anti-war efforts that need to come home.

Senators aren't creatures who glad hand every time they come home. Congresscritters do because they have to.
Keep their asses at work in DC to stop this war. They owe us. They owe us a whole lot.

15. I'm quite happy leaving Lamar Alexander & Bob Corker in DC... |
|
first off, the air smells cleaner when they're gone.
Secondly, I agree with the OP 110% and have been saying the same thing for the past week. Should go for the House too Hell, throw in the DOJ and the White House too. NOBODY gets any time off until our troops are out of harms way. They sent them over there, they should do the time right along with them. Either stay working, or get a damned uniform on and get over there too.
Remember these words??
Politicians hide themselves away, They only started the war Why should they go out to fight, They leave that role to the poor...
Why should the pols be able to go home and sleep in their own beds when our troops can't?

after all, they are paid to represent the people and to follow the will of the people--stay there until the bill is passed-and Bush/Cheney are impeached!

work of the US Congress against Bush and Maliki.
edit: And just realized ... he can also talk about our soldiers in Iraq, who are working 24/7, no time off. In 130 degree heat. Can't leave and take a break in cooler weather. Our troops need to know (a part of) their government is working to correct the course.

and you know the GOPers will look like total crybabies when they whine about having to work through August (Specter already whined this morning about working all night).
The obvious comeback to the inevitable "why waste the taxpayers money this way" is to whip out Barbara Boxer's statement that we spend $250,000 a minute (or was is a second?) on the war right now.
Can't lose, IMO

of the 33 Senators up for re-election in '08 and need to get home to campaign, 22 are Republicans and only 11 Dems. Meaning, to stay in DC is 2x as bad for the GOPers. PLUS, it's a chance to highlight GOP obstructionism as the cause for the Congressional failures. (Reid has had to call for over 40 cloture votes so far, only 7 months into this Congress.)
