If they break for August, it's simple--no money, mo war. FY ends on 9/30, if I'm not mistaken.

11. in summary,
as part of the defense spending bill, several senators attempted to tie the withdrawl from IraqNam over time with the funding of the DOD.

the GOP refused to consider that, and were "forced" to bust a phily. The GOP refused to approve for voting any amendment to the Endless War Department Budget, so Reid took the entire Budget bill off the table (one of his most powerful, but subtle jobs). That leaves no budget to negotiate, and that automatically means that that the funding for IraqNam neds at the end of August.

The GOPers lined up, trying to convince Amurica that democrats = bad and GOP = angels.

22. Not true - the money is NOT cut off
Apparently the defense authorization bill simply states preferences for how money is spent. The actual money is provided by the defense appropriations bill. See the following at TPM Cafe:
http://electioncentral.tpmcafe.com/blog/electioncentral/2007/jul/18/breaking_reid_yanks_defense_authorization_bill_to_force_gops_hand

It should be noted that the Defense authorization bill doesn't have to pass in order for the Defense appropriations bill to become law. While the authorization bill set priorities for things like weapons systems in the defense budget, only the appropriations bill actually funds those priorities -- and, unlike what we said earlier it's not strictly necessary to pass the authorization first, though it is customary.

In short, from the perspective of Pentagon operations, the lack of an authorization bill "isn't a problem, period, as long as an appropriations bill is passed," says Steve Koziack of the Center on Strategic and Budgetary Priorities.

33. Well, I'm guessing if you don't have authorization to spend the money...
...doesn't matter if you have it or not. Otherwise, why would we need two bills?

By the way, at first glance, the "Center on Strategic and Budgetary Priorities" appears to be a corporatist defense contractor think tank: http://www.csbaonline.org

It’s a sign of desperation - the Rats can’t afford to wait until September and face the possibility that the news then from Iraq will be positive - they have to roll the dice now and try to force a surrender to bolster their own domestic political prospects.

They're on his turf and what rules he doesn't know, Byrd does. Think about the other side, any
truly clever guys there (other than Hagel who is on our side). Oh, Sessions, well maybe;)

They're screwed if Reid persists with this. He can shut down a lot of things, including Air Force I if
he has the staying power.

They'll pull out all the nastiest stuff but, you know what, nobody is believing much of what Rove and

I think there's a little too much applause a little too early. We'll see if Harry has the testicular fortitude to keep at this thing when they're not able to refund the war on this and the media pundits start calling him a defeatists who wants our troops to die an other assorted flavors of bullsh*t.

More over, now I want to see if the senate (I think it's the senate if I heard KO correctly) uses it's "Inherent Contempt" powers and drags Harriet Mier's punk ass and Karl Rove's bitch ass into the senate chambers and try them in house for ignoring congressional subpeonas, therefore doing and end around the utterly corrupted injustice department.

The House is like a grand jury, conductim investigations and hearings and decideing whether to proceed with a "trial."

The Senate simply acts as a jury, more or less.

59. If this is such a huge deal, how come the "first read" story...
... doesn't seem to make anything of it?

"After failing to get the 60 votes needed to proceed to a final vote on a troop withdrawal amendment -- and then after failing to reach agreement with GOP leadership on votes other amendments -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pulled the bill from the Senate floor.

In other words, all those other non-binding Iraq amendments waiting for a vote won't get one anytime soon."

Are you SURE you're reading this right?

60. All these amendments...
Are tied to the funding of the war (if I'm correct). So Reid pulled the entire war funding bill which means no one can vote to send more money to the war as a whole. He is in effect voting to defund the war by not allowing anyone to vote on sending more money to it.

It's a big deal assuming he won't bend to pressure.

61. There's also the possibility that they may not break for August recess
if Reid doesn't get his way--in which case the Republicans will be painted as even more obstructionist or that they'll take vacations while the troops are still struggling.

Current funding will end on 9/30, so this may be a very big deal indeed.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x1372439

Of course, we can't expect this level of analysis from our blow-dried spokesmodel media. The pivotal line in that story for me was this: "The benefit for the Democrats of the July push, even the unsuccessful one, has been to redefine the debate over the war."

A lot of DUers may not realize it, but that's MAJOR. The earth is beginning to shift under Washington.

74. Thom Hartmann's Air America interview w/ Paul Craig Roberts, GOP needs another 9-11
or an attack on Iran to rally the troops; that's what's behind the 'surge' in Iraq--prepping for an Iran strike.

The trouble for GOP now is that the cat's outta the bag. ANY attacks either here or in the ME will be scrutinized, and no new AUMF authorization will just be 'given' to BushCo any longer.

62. There have been plenty of stories since. That was a breaker and they never expand on those.
Read below--it's a big deal.

75. They can do it
Maybe just being paranoid but don't they have billions of "missing" taxpayer money that was supposedly shipped off to Iraq in crates? Not to mention the obscene unaccounted for money paid to 'private contractors'. They'll launder the money to pretend it comes from the 'grassroots' of the holy heartland of Mer'ca. All they have to do is fund it until next year when the whole Mess-O-Potamia falls into Hillarys hands.

That way they'll kill two Iraqis with one stone so to speak. Keep their war for profit going, and show that mainstream Americans actually DO support the war. I'm sure the MSM will be stupid enough to fall for it.
