Liberty police dug up driveway to seek baby’s body

Liberty officers dug up a gravel driveway last week looking for a baby’s body as part of an investigation into sexual abuse going back to the 1980s, police revealed at a press conference this morning.

They did not find anything, but they still said they believed that two girls who lived there were repeatedly abused and gave birth to 10 babies, all but one of whom is still alive. A baby who was born to an 11-year-old girl in the mid-1980s died at birth and was buried at the house in a tool box, police said.

The family — including the alleged victims, who are now adults — has since moved.

Siblings who used to live at the house began telling police about the alleged abuse in March. By then, authorities said, the statute of limitations for any crime against the girls had passed. Police do not expect anyone to be charged, said Lt. Mark Misenhelter.

Police have not talked to the suspect in the abuse. But they said they sent a detailed report to authorities in the state where he now lives so they will know of the accusations against him.
