My bird's a Military Macaw. His name is Faraday. That pic was from his first year, he's nine now.

I didn't know there were rescues among the SF wild parrots! Do you know the man who fed them? I have his book and DVD. The Parrots of Telegraph Hill made me cry for two days, stupid movie.

Ah, a military macaw -- I'm still not up on all the macaw species. Beautiful bird, and a cool name! Our friends have a Hahn's and it's one of the cutest, smartest parrots I've ever met (except for my Gnocchi, that is ;) ).

Mickaboo has rescued a bunch of birds from the Wild Parrot flock, and we work with Mark all the time. I try to limit my involvement with that part of the organization, just because the stories of these poor birds can get pretty wearing after a while. The one in my sig is Jasper (you can click to read his story). He's one of the birds that came down with the neural virus that's ravaging the flock. He seems to be doing better, but so many of the birds come to us very sick or injured. It ain't Disney out there :(

If you poke around their website, you'll see lots of the wiild cherry-heads that mickaboo has saved. Some are even up for adoption. Hopefully, we can raise enough cash with this current fund drive that we can start taking in birds again.

Edit: I just looked at the mickaboo site and Jasper is up for adoption!! That means he must be through the worst part of his recovery, which is great news.

29. Well, after awhile, that spy plane was repatriated.
It was flown back to the US in tiny little pieces, that fit inside one of those Enormous Aeroflaut aircraft things that I can't spell, that can fly payload as large as satellites and space stuff around.

The spy plane's arrival was announced by our local news. Moffet Air Force Base is closeby. My friends and I thought it was remarkable that one airplane could fit inside another and then essentially fly over our office building on its way home.

20. The sinking of a Japanese high school fisheries training ship sunk by a US Submarine
February 9, 2001

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0XPQ/is_2001_March_5/ai_72345147

The commander of a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine apologized to Japan in Hawaii on Tuesday evening for the Feb. 9 sinking of a Japanese high school fisheries training ship off Oahu Island, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said Wednesday night.

Cmdr. Scott Waddle, captain of the submarine Greeneville, made the apology when he visited the Japanese Consulate in Honolulu and met with Japanese Parliamentary Foreign Secretary Yoshio Mochizuki, ministry officials told reporters.

Waddle, who was relieved of duty after the accident, was quoted by the officials as telling Mochizuki that he wants to offer an apology for the accident and to meet and directly apologize to the families of the nine missing people if there is a chance.

32. Just some BIG OIL COMPANY EXECUTIVES. Stop asking tough questions!
Republicans participating in an "emergency blow".

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2001/feb2001/jap-f24.shtml

<snip>

The US Navy initially denied that the presence of 16 civilians in the submarine's control room, including wealthy and influential individuals with ties to the oil industry, contributed to the accident. It was then revealed that two civilians were seated at the submarine's controls as it launched into a rapid surfacing technique known as an “emergency blow”. It is widely believed that, far from the action being a training exercise as claimed, it was a demonstration staged for the benefit of the well-connected guests.

For days, the US Navy was not forthcoming as to how the high-tech submarine could have failed to detect a 499-tonne ship. Then on February 20, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed that the Greeneville's sonar had in fact found the Japanese trawler and four other ships at least 70 minutes before the collision. Navigation charts, however, were not updated before the submarine surfaced and struck the Ehime Maru, because the civilians were blocking access to the controls.

Of the three sailors operating the sonar equipment, one was an unqualified trainee. The sailor chiefly responsible for updating the navigation chart has told the NTSB that he did not ask the civilians to make way so he could do his work. It is now believed that the submarine commander had no idea of the sonar results, as they were not reported to him. Moreover, the sonar monitor in his compartment was broken.

These revelations come on top of the fact the Greeneville surfaced outside of the designated testing area for submarines and that it provided no assistance to those on board the sinking ship. The US Navy did not attempt to locate the hull of the vessel for six days even though the accident happened just miles from the massive Pearl Harbor US naval base. By comparison, the Russian navy took a day to begin a search to locate the submarine Kursk last year.

---Nothing to see here. Move along, fella.

NEVER trust a politician who says the will "fix it later".
