Got any bright ideas for the Big 3 and the UAW?
Post them here:

http://wwj.typepad.com/michigan_future/2007/07/auto-talks-to-b.html

Few things are more vital to Michigan's future than this. Bargaining teams from the United Auto Workers will open contract talks with Chrysler Group on Friday, July 20, and with General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. on Monday, July 23.

UAW president Ron Gettelfinger has said that the union is not in a "concessionary mode." But clearly, everyone involved knows that these talks won't be business as usual. Things will change – perhaps radically.

We want to hear from you

How far should the UAW and the Big 3 go in reinventing the relationship between management and labor? What are some of the key tasks they need to get done in this round of bargaining? What would constitute success for either side? What should be done about health care costs?

1. for starters,
the uaw needs to make a stronger push to organize the growing number of japanese/german plants here so their fate is not so irreversibly linked to the big 3, who are slashing and offshoring jobs like crazy...

i'm not sure what will happen--the union will get squeezed, and it's only a question of how much they will concede...it doesn't help that there is a lot of public sentiment against the uaw at present...

2. I am a UAW member...Chrysler employee
I would love to have Job security for the life of the contract, yet again.

I am prepared to pay more for health care..I am prepared to become a "WOM" (workplace operational model) worker...in essence losing seniority and "bought jobs"...I am prepared to forgo wage increases...

Just guarantee me that I'll have a job for the life of the contract..

sad state, innit it..
