SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The body of an apparent stowaway has been found in the nose gear of a United Airlines jet in San Francisco, by mechanics inspecting the plane that had just arrived from China.
A spokesman for San Francisco International Airport says that based on the clothing, the body appeared to be male.
He says the person had apparently crawled inside the nose gear's housing intentionally. The spokesman says that's been attempted before, but that it's impossible to survive without any air to breathe, and at temperatures of about 40-below for 12 hours.
Federal aviation officials say people occasionally try to enter the country without authorization by hiding in a plane's underbelly, often with disastrous consequences.
