CONYERS: " WH LIED ABOUT ROVE"
Top 'Attorneygate' investigator: No 'blind faith' for the White House Michael Roston
Published: Thursday July 19, 2007

Judiciary Committee John Conyers (D-MI), in a prepared opening statement, outlined some of the wrongdoing he saw that required House investigators to continue to pursue subpoenas and other steps.

"We have learned, for example, that the White House was involved in the politicization of the Justice Department," Conyers stated. "New Mexico Republican officials complained repeatedly to Karl Rove and his aides about a voter fraud case that they wanted former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias to pursue. Mr. Iglesias was fired soon after some of these complaints, and one of the complaining Republican officials was suggested as his replacement."

He went on to warn that "the White House participated in false statements to Congress."

Nothing short of impeachment is called for (Gonzo, Cheney, Bush, Rice, etc., take your pick or collect the whole set!), and anything less at this point is just histrionics and theater by the Dems.

but it will take a long time. This will be fought in the courts, we will win, and eventually justice will be served. But it will not happen today, tomorrow, or next week. But it will happen.

61. I wouldn't bet on winning - the right wing has been stacking the courts
for a while now. Setting their ducks in a row so to speak. Action in the congress via impeachment or inherent contempt proceedings is our only chance. Of course when the Bushies decide to stage another false flag operation to save the repuke party, all democratic avenues will be blocked -- we'll be in an EMERGENCY you know. (Reason Bush gave himself those extraordinary powers last May). Read http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18037.htm

12. I'm feeling very old and cynical today - but so what?
The White House will continue to ignore subpoenas and Conyers will make another "strongly worded statement" warn them that they could face contempt charges - and that's as far as it will go.

When he starts issuing warrants for inherent contempt and sends the Sergeant-at-Arms after someone, I'll believe he's serious about actually doing something.

38. No, the L word was not used
Edited on Thu Jul-19-07 10:16 PM by Harvey Korman
Instead we get more linguistic contortions like "participated in false statements" in the interest of decorum.

Meanwhile, members of the Brazilian opposition party call their country's Defense Minister a "murderer" and no one bats an eyelash. A little harsh, to say the least, but arguably their freedom to say what they wish is far greater than our own "free" citizens'.

I wonder when we'll stop jumping though hoops just to tell the truth. Probably never, because this country runs on grade A bullshit. As George Carlin once said, if truth were injected into the political process, the whole system would collapse!

32. I personally don't think any action will ever be taken against this administration.
Edited on Thu Jul-19-07 08:41 PM by Kablooie
I don't know what these threats are meant to do but unless action is taken and we are battling this in the courts, it's simply a puff ball of nothing. I used to have a lot of faith in Conyers but see no teeth behind the rhetoric. I believe he would like impeachment but doesn't have enough backing of the Congress to achieve it. And he won't ever get it.

Bush has the whole country and Congress by the balls and all he has to do is squeeze and everyone will cry uncle.

I hate to say this but I have no faith that anything, ANYTHING, will happen to anyone in this administration while Bush is in office. Even though I believe the majority of Americans want impeachment, I think the majority of Congress does not. And short of impeachment there is nothing that can be done.

We have another OJ case here. A murderer that gets off scott free because of our screwed up system.

Maybe it's time we lose the constitution. It's past it's prime and has no purpose anymore because no one pays any attention to it.

230 years isn't very long for a government to exist but that may be all this one gets.

Great experiment.

Tragic failure.

Other people in their time thought they had it the worst too. There are many who can take a lot-lot more and still would feel like punching back. To me, most of these diaper toten draft dodgen wimps gumming things up in OUR government in their sheer hypocrisy will get their due. What they have done make me want to see their end even more. Their doings, these partisan impulsives will be their own undoings in the end.

Many with a keen eye know a lot, we all must share what we know collectively to make it work. Personally, i have been watching this steady undermine of our government as close as i can for at least twenty-eight years and it looks closer than ever now. Trust, just trust, the worst looks yet to come but you can trust we will get through it too somehow

53. Criminal law’s credibility
Edited on Fri Jul-20-07 08:28 AM by flashl
The public’s perception that the “OJ” deviation is the most egregious case in criminal justice evince the media’s power. For once, when anyone wants to punctuate ‘law without justice’ use the name, millionaire Robert Durst, instead of OJ. Durst is a free man who accidentally chopped up his neighbor and dumped the remains in a river; he has a missing wife whose remains have never been found.

34. Government by thuggery . . .
As Randi Rhodes keeps making clear, we are intended to be a nation of laws; not of men.

And, in order to move on this the nation has to understand the importance of these firings.

I don't really know if what we are facing is entirely clear to Americans -- i.e., fascism.

And/or if the response from what is left of our "people's government" will be enough.

The bad guys have been working at this a long, long time --

probably since the beginning of the Constitution; understanding the threat that democracy was to

them.

And they've been busting holes in our system with violence for a very long, long time.

Including 9/11 --

I do sincerely hope that no one's delicate sensibilities were offended. That would be unkind!

Sometimes, it's better to take a strongly-worded letter, and tear it up. You'll feel better for expressing yourself, but our Dear Leader won't have his feelings hurt by your brash assertions.

46. If Cannon really believes what he says, then he should be rooting for Inherent Contempt
"We anticipate a court battle which I very much fear we will lose," he said. "By we, I mean Congress...we will perpetually undermine Congress's prerogatives in overseeing future administrations."

So he's worried about Congress losing power. Then Inherent Contempt is the answer. Have her tried by Congress. Hold him to his word. He should then back this move wholeheartedly so as to not only retain power, but get back some power to the Congress.

50. Inherent Contempt Law- the ONLY option left to Congress
If they hold Meyers to merely "contempt of Congress" it moves to Gonzales who will kill any lawsuit. The Inherent Contempt ruling will keep it in Congress for the trial, conviction AND sentencing.

Conyers KNOWS this and is acting like the elder statesman that he is.

Fear not, it's all happening....
