Tim Russert...Can you guess who is his dream "get"?
Can you guess who is his dream "get"?
It's rock and roll star Bruce Springsteen. "I'm very intrigued by him," Russert said. "He has a real understanding of the political dialogue, of faith and life in urban America."

Russert already has a connection to "the Boss." "I booked concerts for John Carroll in Cleveland," Russert recalled. "We paid $2,500 to book him on a Tuesday night in February 1974."
Aside from the indelible mental snapshot of seeing a brilliant performer 18 months before he made it big, Russert cherishes the memory for a more practical reason: "I made enough money to pay for my second year of law school."
He said he told Springsteen the story once when he ran into him at a New York City restaurant. Springsteen laughed and said, "That sounds like one of my songs."

I bet Russert could woo Springsteen by playing snippets of his tunes to accompany appearances by the candidates: "Glory Days" for Sen. John McCain, "Born to Run" for Sen. Hillary Clinton, "Two Hearts" for John Edwards, "It's Hard to be a Saint in the City" for Mitt Romney, "New York City Serenade" for Rudy Giuliani, "Jungleland" for Mayor Michael Bloomberg and, of course, "I'm on Fire" for Obama.
If Michael Dukakis, comes on the show, Russert can cue up "Kitty's Back" for the missus.

I asked Russert if he had reached out to Springsteen to request an interview. He shook his head, as if he was unworthy of the meeting. It was reassuring to see that even Tim "No Surrender" Russert, the scourge of Washington, could act a little overwhelmed by someone.

1. I grew up a few blocks from Bruce in Freehold, remember him well. His
Aunt Dora was very involved with county republican politics back in the day. I strongly doubt Bruce would appear with Tim, last time I heard he was pretty left-leaning and very against the war. Bruce is a gentleman however, and if asked will be most diplomatic. I doubt however Timmeh will get his "get."

3. I've met him 4 times I think
and the last time I spoke to him was in March and I asked him if he was following what was happeneing in the House when they were doing the first Iraq debate-he said a little bit. I also thanked him for what he tried to do for John Kerry in '04 he said "we do what we can".I was really glad that he wasn't a weirdo like so many other famous people we see (The Gene Simmonses, Ozzy Osbournes and Brett Michaels of reality TV shows).Meeting Bruce shot to hell the notion that you should never meet your heroes.I'm proud to have met him-being a Jersey guy and all like I am.

6. I love Jersey Guys, did you read today in the Asbury Park Press
about "Vinnie Gorgeous?" Mob guy was upset because he didn't have a shirt and tie (only a tee) and the judge got him a very nice shirt and tie of his own. Only in Jersey, right?? Vinnie was/is a Bonnano guy accused of various activities...

4. Let's Go To The Request Lines
In the Spring of '74 I was rockin' the 4am-7am shift at my college station and I'd have a regular caller always request something from this new guy from New Jersey...it was Kity's Back from The Wild, The Innoncent & The E Street Shuffle. At first I kinda brushed her off cause I'd never heard of the guy and it wasn't in the station's "playlist", but she was both persistant and sexy sounding...and, how could I say no? She then said, "just you wait, this guy's gonna take the country by storm". I didn't need to be sold...the first time I heard Kity's Back and then Rosalita and Growing Up, I saw sold on this mysterious guy from Asubury Park.

There are some voices of reason and inspiration that Rock music have provided. Springsteen has constantly spoken to a sense of fairness and honesty that has grown stronger over the years. His performances in the America Stands Up concerts in '04 were inspiring...and so has his committment to the Democratic Party.

I'm hoping there's another concert series next year that brings musicians of all generations together.

Yep...Russert IS unworthy of meeting The Boss. He lost that right when he sold out to Jack Welch and GE.

7. Absolutely right on that. Bruce is no hypocrit, just an "everyman's man."

5. He seems to be quite a leftie...
Have you listened to his Seeger Sessions albums?
If you haven't, go with the "American Land" version, and then listen very carefully to "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?".
No love for Mr. Bush on that track.

LOTS of love for Mr. Springsteen, from a former Jersey girl.

8. I remember the day

I was browsing the reading material at my dad's barber shop and BS was on the front cover of TIME or NEWSWEEK. That's the first I heard of him. Russert has a man-crush. I like to think of him as more of a stoic than that.

baby, I was born to run
