Rifle-toting 'patriot' shoots at 'Iraqis'

CHARLOTTE COUNTY: A rifle-toting Charlotte County man is accused of taking aim at people he thought were Iraqis running through his friend's yard. He calls himself a patriot - deputies call him a criminal.

He missed his targets, but the shooting left about eight bullet holes in a neighbor's home on Bristol Street.

Arthur Miller, 58, told deputies he was firing the shots because he was trying to defend his country against the Iraqis he thought were running through his friend's backyard.

Annie Harrison was watching TV with her boyfriend when her house came under attack.

And yes this is Florida, and I'm ready for the coments that are sure to follow.

He could have easily bought it 30 years ago, when he was of sound mind.

... nor does it compel folks to match the magnitude of their outrage with a proportional action to the degree they're able.

I keep wondering why, if we truly believe what we say to the degree that we say it, we're not placing a greater risk to our comforts in the actions we undertake. It perplexes me, to say the least. (And I'm being self-inclusive in that perplexity.)

It's a conundrum.

25. One-upmanship is a game no group has a monopoly on.
Neither, apparently, does ending a sentence with a preposition.
This is a situation up with which I will not put!

27. Yes. English is somewhat anomalous in its (our) grammatical structure.
The pre(post)position is a minor example; most languages make more 'sense' by placing adjectives -after- the subject or object: We say, for example, "I have a brown dog." The first word heard is the adjective which while significant, reduces the more important noun's impact. If I say it in, for example, Spanish, it's "Yo tengo un perro marron" which focuses the meaning more on the dog; its color is useful information but secondary to the major point.

And that's all I need to say, and way more than anyone wants to hear, about that.
;-)
