The fillibuster can be a useful tool, and we would be setting a poor precedent (not to mention being rather hypocritical) by resurrecting the "nuclear option".
It is obvious the Republicans are abusing it.
Let them hoist themselves on their own petards...

Don't forget the filibuster number was reduced from 66 to 60 because the Republics complained too much in the 70's that it was unfair.
If we want to pass legislation, we need 60 reliable votes. If we want to be sure the legislation gets enacted, we need 66 reliable votes.

When there's no money for Suzie's college tuition those few middle class people who still consider themselves R's will have something to say.

6. No we shouldn't dump it but the Democratic party screwed themselves |
|
When they were the minority party....instead of Filibustering they chose to negotiate....they decided to create a group for negotiating...
The question is will they learn from this huge error? If they would have filibustered we might be talking about something else...
Geeze how many times do you get kiced in the head before you realize....this shit hurts?

it and it would be just as wrong now. The dems have to get together though with single message on the hypocrisy of the GOP amd how they are not for the people at all. I wish the DNC would do a commercial.

15. We need more than symbolic gestures... |

The Republicans knew that all they had to do was stay up all Tuesday night and everything would be fine. The American people didn't get the Dems' message. They just saw the Dems fail at yet another attempt to accomplish something. If the Democratic leadership had put a credible threat of using the Nuclear Constitutional Option and eliminating the filibuster Wednesday morning, then the Republicans would have reacted differently.
They certainly couldn't loudly defend the sanctity of filibusters! Instead, they get to filibuster all the time, because their filibusters are not in the public consciousness.
And what if the filibuster was eliminated? It's a procedural rule, it could be reinstated -- just not by the minority party! I agree that this would set a bad precedent, but I think that the Republicans know that as much as anyone else. They'd either back down, or lose everything.

could do it one day, and be in the minority a half hour later and REALLLLY want it back. It's the nature of the Senate....

I think that people shouldn't even have to filibuster, the Senate ought to have a 40 vote minority veto constitutionally guaranteed. Filibusters are stupid, but only because they make Senators give long winded meaningless BS speeches.

10. The Republicans have a strateg- Their goal is to turn |
|
Public Opinion around enough for them to take back the House and Senate and win the Presidency in the next election.
Jeff Birnbaum a regular on the Fox News Panel (Brit Hume Hour)
Birnbaum explained that when the GOP was in charge, the Dems obstructed at times. The election was supposed to get rid of the do nothing Republicans. Republicans lost seats. Dems are in charge. The Republicans are obstructing making it impossible for Dems to get anything passed. They can go to the people and say . Look the Dems cannot govern put us back in charge. GOP plays to win. Our party has never learned this or one wing chooses to ignore it because they often agree with the Republicans.
General Edelmans letter to HRC saying she is essentially aiding and abetting the enemy. Read KO' Special Comment MSNBC. She is being set up. Folks, anyone who disagrees with the WH is aiding and abetting the enemy. Old Viet Nam Tactics. Guys--we are the enemy.
GOP plays to win. The election has started. Our party had best wake up and smell the coffee.
Watch my lips. Sept 15 will change nothing---We will be in Iraq forever it seems. Could this be why the Republicans stuck together and did not start to peel away from Bush. They knew we are going no where.

13. Dr. Frist,, is that you? |

The Senate is supposed to be a more deliberative body than the House. The filibuster is one of the features that makes it so.
Like every feature of democratic government, sometimes I like the way it's used and sometimes I don't.
So I won't throw the baby out with the bath water.

14. rove is pulling their strings. |
|
They will do this to any and every bill no matter how small so they can try to sink this congress. That and only that is why. They know the republican press will spin it their way. They know the democrats won't stand a chance to get the real message out there. So they say any and every thing they can. Look at bush now trying to get the pentagon to swift boat Hillary. Of all the people bashing the war, and there are a hell of a lot of republicans, why pick on Hillary. bush and his lack of a brain wants more spite. spite -- spite----spite. He is such an ineffective screw up he is trying to get back at anybody he can.
